Three reasons conservatives oppose PR statehood:

1. Brown people.
2. Many don't speak English.
3. Two more Democrats in the Senate.

That about sums it up.

Until they view themselves as Americans first and put the American flag above any other flag (that includes the Puerto Rican flag) and give loyalty to the U.S. Constitution then we should pause in shoving statehood to Puerto Rico when the majority in the island don't want it, don't understand what it means to be an American and they don't feel Americans.

They don't teach American Civics in the public schools in Puerto Rico.....that should give us pause.

The reason they keep holding on to the U.S.A is for the federal aid and benefits. If you take away that, they would have demanded Independence from the U.S.A. a long time ago......the glue that holds them to the USA is the federal aid and the benefits of the U.S. CITIZENSHIP.....But most of them don't feel Americans. They never call themselves Americans, they call themselves Puerto Ricans or Boricuas and they will only waive the Puerto Rican flag and not the USA flag. They want to keep their Olympic team because they want to waive the Puerto Rican flag and not the USA.

by the way, some Puerto Ricans are PRO USA first but they are they minority in the island. You waive the American flag in the island and the majority will view you as a "sell out" a "gringo" and an outsider.

All you have to ask Puerto Ricans one question to settle this:
Do you view yourself as Americans above everything else or you view yourself as only Puerto Ricans........when most answer "Yo soy Boricua pa' que tu lo sepas" (I'm Puerto Rican so you will know it) that answer the question why we should give pause on statehood.

1) white people (gringos)
2) Many don't speak their native language ( Spanish)
3) They don't feel Americans.

Most Puerto Ricans in the island don't understand American Civics or the U.S. Constitution and how the American government works. Trying to explain to them the EC system is like speaking Chinese to them......most of them only care which politician and party will promise them the most federal aid and government handouts while staying a Territory and that is usually the Democrat party.

Politically it's part of the United States, but really it's its own nation with its own identity, accent, music, cuisine, etc. It'd make more sense as its own country, or possibly a separate state in the Dominican Republic.

They are smart enough to realize that if a large powerful country treats you fairly as a colony, you're better off staying with them than leaving, a lesson that Jamaica has learned.

What?! LOL Spanish is not an accent. Puerto Ricans are not English Speakers.

80% of them are white! In every one of these threads someone tries to make a race argument. Most Puerto Ricans are not even "brown".

Are you talking about some sociopolitical concept of "brown" for people who don't actually have brown skin?

Lot's of people go and get a rude awakening. Listen to Puerto Ricans talk to American investors.

Recently, Crypto Investors have been relocating to Puerto Rico to avoid capital gains taxes on their profits. They're getting into shouting matches with the locals who don't like their plans.

Say what? Listen to them saying, "You Americans". I thought Puerto Ricans were supposed to be Americans.

So when there's too many Gringos moving to Puerto Rico meddling around in their affairs, all the sudden they become a different country and American investors are treated like foreign invaders.

This is reason #15,238 why Puerto Rico is not compatible with the United States and should never become a state. They have the rights of citizenship out of convenience, but they don't actually see themselves as Americans and don't consider mainlanders to be their countrymen.

They are NOT American.

I think it's time, based on principles, despite a likely increase in smuggling and refugees in PR.

The majority of (voting) Puerto Ricans support statehood, and at 3 million population it's larger than 21 states.

We should grant them independence and ship all of our illegals there.

No. Not unless they are willing to have non-Puerto Ricans helping to run their local government as a check and balance system. And the whole island will have to be run more formally. All those squatter shanty towns will have to be surveyed and documented. All those multi-generational shacks should be titled and the deeds given to those living in them. No more off the grid living, and this will help future FEMA aid.... but the shanty owners will be expected to pay property taxes.

Then there will be the huge headache of bringing up ALL of the shanties and structures on the island up to US building code standards. And who is going to pay for that??? Certainly not the Puerto Ricans. But it's not the fault of the mainlanders that their building standards are so low and basically non-existent.

I don't think that Puerto Ricans realize how much they will lose by becoming a US state. In the long run, they will lose their culture and be taken advantage of the capitalistic wealthier mainlanders.

And a really big downside for the Puerto Ricans will be rich mainlanders coming to their island and buying up all the good real estate. The impoverished islanders will end up still stuck n the remote inland areas in their shantytowns.

There's no way to "fix" or regulate Puerto Rico without changing it as a nation. You would not be able to lecture Puerto Rican politicians into being responsible and honest. For that to happen, the whole Puerto Rican government would have to be replaced.

It's best to not even go through the trouble and help them transition into independence.
