Politically it's part of the United States, but really it's its own nation with its own identity, accent, music, cuisine, etc. It'd make more sense as its own country, or possibly a separate state in the Dominican Republic.

Yes. This begs the question of what the US has been doing for the last 120 years. What is the long term vision? Is it a case of 19th century colonialism which had been allowed to drift into the 21st century. Now the costs may be higher than any income, do we just say " We divorce thee". I think that with the length of time involved there should be a reasonable explanation of statehood. If not the divorce settlement and alimony should be huge.
