I say fund it only if the US is threatened. Asteroid going to waste another part of the world, let it.

Not gonna pick a side in terms of money but it seems like people don’t realize that no matter who pays we all reside on the same rock. Not saying anyone shouldn’t pay their fair share.

You do realize if its big then the event won’t br isolated. Would be bad for everyone. Environmentaly and economically.

First off, any space war tech wouldn't stop one from hitting earth after it was intercepted. It would only fragment it possibly making it worse. Anything of actual value to the planet would have to be much farther out in orbit and the logistics of that seem impossible today.

I just wonder if asteroids/meteors are not a bigger concern than we are led to believe!

After all, I very much doubt anyone from NASA or our govt would inform the public if they knew of an impending strike and it was going to major, that kind of news would cause instant chaos, runs on the banks, anarchy in the streets, etc.

I've long thought (as an amateur astronomer) that we should allocate more resources to tracking near earth objects (NEO's). All it would take is one to make us have a really bad day. The dinosaurs didn't have the brains or the technology to defend themselves from the Yucatan impact. We do. Why not use it?

Just for perspective, here is a plot of the trajectories for roughly 1,300 NEO's we were tracking as of 2013 (courtesy of NASA). This is thought to be only a small sliver of all of them that actually exist. With enough warning time, we could advert catastrophe by sending something up and nudge the object out of our way using a gravitational tug.

Depends on the size of the object. If it is something the size of a car or bus, it's mostly bad news for the local environment (economic impact would depend on the location of ground zero). If it's something the size of a mountain, it's adios humanity no matter where you are.

Conservatives don't believe in asteroids; won't get funded.
