Stalin and Mao were neither one communists. There has never been a true communist country. If you think there has been, you don't know what communism actually is.
Communism was a simple idea that would never work. There would be no leader, all would be equal. Everyone would put what they made or grew into the communal pot and would only take out what they need. Of course, do to human greed, it would never work. Russia, China, Korea, Cuba etc. have all been forms of authoritarian or dictatorships, just using the name "communist".
Possibly ignorant or under-educated overall, but not stupid.
First, keep in mind that just because some particular attempts at communism didn't work out well doesn't mean that it's not possible that some other version might be fine. To say that the problem is that they're ignorant of the crimes of communism is as silly as saying, "How can young people want to drive - don't they know how many people die in car accidents?"
But, more importantly, they're probably seeing the unfettered capitalism isn't working well.
Saying "some particular attempts at communism didn't work out well" seems wrong. 100 million dead (according to some estimates) seems to warrant a stronger response than "didn't work out well."

Leftist indoctrination- they are no longer taught actual history in public schools. Very few, if any, high school students know anything about the mass murders of Stalin and Mao. They are now taught that Christopher Columbus was the biggest mass murder in history!
Keep in mind that revisionist history was a stated tool of Stalin and is used effectively by the left today.
