I doubt if we can properly recover if we have leadership with the ideals that we have experienced the last and long 8 yrs. We need some firm jaws that know what they are doing. We need things put in the proper perspective--the tail can never wag the dog--money or no.

America is unique--we are very resilient, we are enterprising. With wisdom and the above mentioned--I think we will be O.K.-- but we are going to wear some scars.
No argument there

I saw the huge demonstrations against immigration laws. I also saw the Mexican flags being waved at the protest march. These flags have now been put away but the huge illegal population and their legal friends and families do make huge numbers in protests.

Perhaps, but legals or not, they're here. As you've said in your country, there are more than enough to make a dent. Protests aside, it's how the gov. acts that'll be the deciding factor.

And certainly, it's a much bigger battle than just immigration reform on the horizon

I have said all along that i admire America. I have also said that it has always been a straight talking, "lets get this done" country. What i do fear is that slowly but surely this side of America is being eroded. To sit back and think it will all be OK is naive. I agree with you bluskyz that the tail should never wag the dog, but i fear that is happening in America and maybe a lot of Americans are too close to see it coming. To see it from the outside is so different. I have been coming back and forth to America for quite a while now. It's like not seeing a child for a while and then you se him and say " you have changed so much" yet the parents didn't notice the change.

You cannot ignore one problem and hope it doesn't affect the whole. Illegals are not the only problem but they are a big problem that is getting bigger. All countries are built on immigration. It's the huge ILLEGAL problem that should be rectified.

I've spent plenty of time outside the US, problem is: those places were in much worse condition than here. So our rock bottom, would be their 'rock-top' if you will.

thinking everything is OK is naive in any situation, but at the same time, thinking every bad time is the 'last' time is too pessimistic for my tastes.

I mean, at what point in the last 100 years did anyone think it WAS going to be OK? On average, there's a major war every 10-12 years with economic bouncing to go with it so I'm just not feeling the: "this is it for real this time" thing.

I remember what my father was saying during the gas crisis how everyone was going to have to move because there was going to be no gas left for anyone to drive,
Or the old saying that if we lost Vietnam, then democracy would lose...

Same kind of problems, different events. It gets old after awhile

Well, of course one school of politics in the US says the way to elimiate that problem is simply to make them all LEGAL at one fell swoop -- every couple of years. I would venture to say that all three major presidential candidates share that view, overtly or covertly.

If England had a border with Bangaldesh, as the US does with Mexico, what do you think the UK's policy would be? Which political bloc would be on which side?

Is this Presidential Election with the choice of three candidates that will do nothing and just carry on the status quo, the last nail in the American coffin?

Coffin? There is no coffin - how ridiculous.

Without a border with India or Pakistan or other countries, the UK has had virtually a open border policy. It is harder for a American to get a visa here than a iraqi assylum seeker. Legal immigrants bring good things to a country and work hard. Do you not see the problems of terrorism or drug infestation by having no Borderto speak of.
Yes 66 there will always be problems but that is no excuse for ignoring present problems. As they say "forewarned is forearmed"
