Perhaps this is better suited in the philosophy section but since the stone age till today and probably till the sun goes nova we have always had people that have a lot more power/influence/authority than others and they can never do no wrong. They can happily beat/murder/rape/sexually assault/bribe/commit every horrible action known to man yet they they just keep going and going and going like the energizer bunny happily doing whatever they want no matter how bad it is just because they have power.
Why do you think it is that this has always and will always be the case for however humans live? People talk about Karma but it's a load of BS, the rich and powerful never have to worry about facing consequences, or at least any consequences that the poor peasants must face for doing the same things. Like that stupid afluenza kid that got a nice vacation for killing several people. In a just world he'd be facing medieval kinds of torture.
As the saying goes, power corrupts. But I also believe it works the other way. Corrupt people seek power and are willing to do anything to get it.
I think it's because the rest of us succumb to fear. We don't like abuse of power, but we're too afraid to put our necks on the line to do anything about it.
Ordinary people tend to crave comfort, convenience, and security more than power. So the power hungry provide the masses with a measure of comfort and security to keep them quiet. Sometimes all they have to do is promise security, keep breaking the promises, but keep saying "it'll be different next time"--and people believe it.
Ordinary people also have a hard time imagining what sociopaths/psychopaths will do. They think because they would never rob/kill/steal/murder, etc. to get in power, that no one else would do that either. Or they sorta know things are bad, but they rationalize that they're not that bad.
People also like freedom, but not the responsibility that goes with it. We want someone to bail us out. The power hungry gladly step in to fill the void--at a cost, of course.
I think at its core it's a spiritual problem. Humanity is trapped in a low state of consciousness. It takes effort, introspection, and the courage to face hard truths about ourselves if humanity is to throw out elites. We say we want power hungry elites out--but we don't mean it--and the power hungry know it.

What do you think power means? What you basically opined about is a tautology.
Power is usually defined as being able to do with others cannot do due to lack of strength (either physical or in the legal and/or financial sense).
there are lots of historical examples of powerful people not "getting away with it."
usually, it involves another force eliminating them. and, it also depends upon one's
definition of power. is a Mafia boss powerful? a Mayor? a Movie Star?
and...how long do they get away with it? ten years? twenty?
and...what actually happens afterwards, since none of us
will "get away" with anything, ultimately.
