And Trump's first statement concerning Mattis leaving was another lie. Mattis isn't "retiring", he's resigning in protest. Huge difference.

It is the only person who has left the White House that Trump met with face to face

Trump likely thought he could jolly him along and get what he wanted out of him--
The only thing he really got that Mattis likely didn't want to do was move troops to the border at Thanksgiving
And he couldn't say no w/o resigning--guess he hoped Trump would be too busy with Mueller and the economy

I'm more or less independent in my political views, but I never gave Trump a chance. I never liked Trump BEFORE he ran for office. I hated him BEFORE the fact.
What chance did he need? Most knew who how would be before he was "elected".
Did you change when you got a different job or could you behavior be predicted based on your previous experience?

And let's not forget the man is over 70
We know elderly people are the least likely to welcome change
And Trump is certainly not that type of person--
He is not intellectually curious---he doesn't like new experiences--
He always stays at known places like his own hotels when he travels
He is a creature of habit--not just the dark lagoon...
So what he was is what he was bringing to the table when he ran for POTUS
The fact that voters either didn't care what his history showed him to be or wanted to believe the hype that what he was would be a new, improved methods of running the presidency--
