The potential for behaviors to be perceived as harassment increase with alcohol and is not limited to males hitting on females. Sometimes clients are involved, too.
More importantly is alcohol liability for property damage and bodily harm ( usually but not always involving a car). Every case is different and outcomes are variable. Some have made it to state Supreme Courts. And then there’s the issue of under- aged employees being served alcohol.
Corporate insurers and attornies typically strongly advise their clients to nix the alcohol and avoid creating a perception that attendance is mandatory to avoid potential liabilities.
Where did I mention one specific form of harassment, or suggest that said form (male harassing female) is the one and only downside?
I said that any corporate sponsored event that includes alcohol has exactly no upside and tons of downside. Men harassing women is one of the many downsides of which I speak.
IMHO, if a corporation a) buys or provides alcohol for an event and b) makes the event mandatory, then they are c) asking for trouble.

No one is harassing that fatty. Probably why she is upset.
I can't imagine WHY anyone would want to get within arm's length of her, given her bitter personality. Attitudes like hers are the reason I've backed off of feminism where relationships are concerned. These females don't realize their ham-fisted strong-arming puts off the decent guys as well as the jerks.
Naw they should just give all the women karate lessons for Christmas.
Well, that's a sexist statement. And racists too. Why should learn a Japanese martial art? What about all the other ethnic ways of self defense?
And women should never have to defend themselves. The world should drop to its need if one passes by. /eyeroll/ /sarcasm/
PS. I'm female. Sick of the IDIOCY of today's whining "feminists." They so pathetically WANT to be victims, it gives all women a bad name.
You like the NY Times writer, make the case for why women are suppose to stay home clean house and raise the kids.
Want to hear the punchline?
I didn't even read the article. I get five freebies from the NYT every month, and wasn't about to waste one on that. The only reason I replied at all was because I agree with Brave New World that an afternoon off would be vastly preferable to most office "social" functions.
...due to the difficult task of "choosing clothes that signal that you are polished without being boring, attractive without being provocative, and that you’re looking to be promoted, not propositioned."
"For women, it’s never easy," she says, adding that men "have it all figured out" when it comes to festive wear.
JFC, are they equal or not? They scream that females are equal to males, and then say this bs.
Put on a pair of black slacks and a white blouse.
Neutral, but still professional looking.
Done.
Friggin' idiot.
Someone not knowing how to dress themselves appropriately is not my problem, and should not be the reason that everyone else should have something taken away from them. Go ask your grandma if you can't figure it out.

The dogma is if they don't want it NO ONE can have it. NO ONE!!!!!
Leftist/liberal/feminist dogma is to establish and ENFORCE complete and utter control over EVERYONE ELSE'S LIVES.
But they are tolerant and diverse and peace loving and respectful and inclusive ..............
Ok someone here must work for the Daily Wire.
The article linked was hot garbage click bait.
That NYT Op-Ed literally made three points that I have heard my entire adult life concerning women and attending any party. Heck it was much more tame than the version I usually hear.
This is what I got out of it.
1. Men get to wear the same suit / shirt / tux to everything with no judgement, women get judged on the dress, hair, makeup ect.
2. If ETOH is involved then watch your six, there might be a sleaze bag lurking.
3. Why have these parties in the first place, cost alone is silly, send us home early.
The television interview quoted in the daily wire article was more of the same with a quip about wearing a bathing suit under your clothes like Ford. Maybe that was the trigger for some?

By who? THE OTHER WOMEN.
Men don't care what women wear.
But it's somehow the men's fault. So no one should have office parties.
