Entire Russian companies were devoted to this effort so I wouldn’t call it baseless, you are looking at one minor aspect to dismiss their attempt to steer our election.

Not 100% sure of your intent there...but I think I got it.
Their intent was to destabilize our trust in our government and our institutions. I think that was a higher goal then getting Trump or Clinton in. Although they did decide to push for Clinton near the end of 2016.
And no, I didn't want to see the Russians influence Americans to divide us, or to elect Trump. Why do you?

If Russia wants to take out ads on Facebook or Google, so what? Last I checked it was the internet, and is open to anyone. Much adieu over nothing.
Because you can't buy political ads, and pretend you are someone you are not. There are legalities involved.
