I had no problem with the 1st Lady trying to suggest (rather than the government mandate) healthier food for kids to eat at school.
American kids need to get healthier, and one of the ways is certainly improving their diets. I'd also like to see a return to more PE, which for some kids is the only exercise they will ever get.
Very true. Fortunately the elementary school my grandson attends hired a full time physical ed instructor. The kids have PE 3 with her 3 times a week, activities are varied and include running laps, relay races, soccer, or calisthenics.
Given the overweight/ obesity epidemic in the US, it’s obvious many children are learning unhealthy habits at home. It’s just another one of the life skills that have been delegated to schools, in some districts.
All the waste in my school in Britain went to feeding pigs, as for out of date produce in the shops it was either reduced or went to the homeless/food banks.
Nothing was wasted. Indeed British prisons often have farms for this precise reason.
As for waste if you read the articles more US School children were actually eating a healthy school diet.

I have a 7 year old nephew, and my sister-in-law feeds him nothing but junk. When my husband and I watch him, I cook him nutritious foods, and he loves it.
It's certainly possible to feed kids healthy food that they actually enjoy.
The problem that a lot of people have, including Michelle Obama, is thinking that healthy eating means simply eliminating "bad" foods.
No. The real trick is making healthy replacements that are actually tasty.
You want kids to see healthy alternatives as an upgrade, not as deprivation.
The fact that Michelle Obama's quest to serve our kids healthy lunches was politicized just tells you how far off into the loonie bin the right wing has gone.
It wasn't politicized until it failed and the expense was revealed.
The school lunch program was working well in 2007 and it will go back to working well.

DH and I eat pretty darn healthy, but enjoy all kinds of foods. The manlet is always making fun of us for it, but when you put that food in front of him he scarfs it down, and very few times has he said he doesn't like something (I'm fine with him telling me he didn't enjoy something), and my favorite is when I mention AFTER he ate huge helpings, to tell him it was all vegetarian.
