A semi auto is much better for rabbits, squirrels and feral hogs.
Some purists would argue their bolt action ruger 22 is king, but I tend to agree that for proper varmint clearing work (yes, city people, varmint clearing with a.223 rifle is a thing in rural America, like an actual chore and all), a semiauto .223 is about as good as tools get.

When you flush a dozen rabbits and you are hunting them to eat, a semi-auto is best.

Indeed. I am a bolt action purist for certain things, but I have semiautos as well, and for things like you describe, they are the best tool for the job, period.
The semi-auto was designed as a deer gun nearly 30 years before the AR was even on the drawing board. It was called a deer gun and marketed as a deer gun. It was called the model 8.
The correct term is "assault style weapon." That's the term the New York Times (America's newspaper of record) uses, so that is what I use.
Washington State recently enacted, by a vote of the people, a law that re-defines "assault rifle" as any semiautomatic-style rifle. Hence, at least here in WA, it is legally correct to refer to the AR 15 as an assault rifle. It's right there in the law.
The problem with shotguns is the recoil....... For people who are not "shooters" this is a problem. I personally prefer a handgun in close quarters, but that is what I train with most often. For most people the ability to put many rounds downrange with minimum recoil is paramount.
"Low recoil" buckshot loads are available to those who are "sensitive." In reality, should a situation arise, you aren't going to be thinking about recoil when you pull the trigger!
An ethical hunter doesn't "spray and pray". This country was settled wiith single-shot rifles that took 30 seconds to a minute to reload between shots. If you know your weapon and practice with it, one shot is still sufficient. My Ruger #1 in .30-06 I bought in 1985 is still taking deer as fast as they walk in front of me.
in other words you have bought into the gun grabber argument that the AR-15 is somehow a black scary rifle that goes out and kills people by itself, or that somehow it commands its owner to go out and kill people through some form of mind control. regardless of what you think, the AR-15 is still a SEMIAUTOMATIC firearm just like your 30.06 rifle. pull the trigger and hold it down and it fires only one shot, unless you have modified it to full auto fire.
