For a long time there has been this competition within Latin America for influence, where China is willing to invest billions in infrastructure and energy that the United States simply isn’t. Or maybe it's more now again.

If China has invested so many billions there then why are they still shtholes with their people desperate to leave? Either China really hasn't invested nearly as much as is suggested or it proves investing billions there generates no results.

You DO remember Trump stating last week in a public meeting in the white house, "One way or the other, the wall will be built".
In laymen's terms that simply means, there is more than one way to skin a cat.

He probably had this billions for Mexico, and Central America already agreed to so, he knew he would moving that money to the wall project.
And people think he is brainless, and call him stupid.

Like I have said many times on this forum, one doesn't amass billions by being stupid.
Regardless of what the democrats say, or think, the wall will be built.

My guess is, the military will be the one's building it.

Bob.

Sure, spend 5 billion on a wall that Mexico was gonna pay for AND give Mexico 10 billion for NOT paying for the wall just when the country has the largest deficit ever.

Gotta love conservative logic.

You need to read the original post.
Mexico is only going to get 4.8 bil, the other goes to Central America.

It does not take a rocket scientist to know that neither Mexico, or Central America will ever see a dime of that money.
It is going to pay for the wall.

In business it is called, diversion of funds, and the President is a master at that.
The wall is going to be built.

Bob.

A Mexico News Daily article - sorry no link handy - gave credit to the US for this but noted that it involves no new funding on the part of the US but reallocates funds already designated for aid programs. So somebody else is paying for it.

To begin with, there is no "new"money that is going to Mexico, or central America.
and any funds allocated on paper for these areas, is going to be diverted to constructing the wall.
As for where the money "comes from", that is an easy one.
It will come from the general fund.
That is the fund set up to help with emergencies like hurricanes, flood, fires, etc.

You will notice, there is no mention of congress allocating these funds to Mexico/Central America.
A "pledge" by the President to give these funds is not binding, unless congress votes on it, and this will not come before the congress.

I "pledge" to send you $10,000 next year, but that in no way guarantees that I won't use that money for something else instead.
Same principal applies to a "presidential pledge".

Oh, the money is there in the general fund, but Mexico/Central America, won't see any of it.
The only thing they will see is what the money was used for, when all those that would try and enter here illegally are stopped by this giant wall.

If you, and any other's don't believe walls work, go to Google, and click on images, and type in Israel wall.
That wall is impenetrable.
Just look how high it is, compared to people standing next to it.
If anyone could scale it, it would almost certainly end in death.

Bob.

Mexico will be using some of this windfall to pay for the asylum seekers who are stuck there waiting for their cases to be heard. They agreed to do this per Sec. Kirsten Nielsen today. Humanitarian aid. We shall see.
