They aren't escaping violence, it's all about the safety-net here in America for people with multiple children.

Baltimore, Tijuana, St. Louis, Jackson, Birmingham are much higher than where they are coming from.

Homicide rate of 26 per 100,000 in Guatemela

https://www.breitbart.com/border/201...o-far-in-2018/

Tijuana has had 2,200 homicides with 1.3 million thru November for a rate of 160 per 100,000

Jackson police investigating two deadly weekend shootings

Jackson ,MS has had 82 homicides so far with 160,000 people

https://www.bhamwiki.com/w/List_of_B...icides_in_2018

Birmingham, AL has had 105 with 210,000 people.

St. Louis, Baltimore and many others are nearly double the rate of Guatemela.

Jackson, Birmingham, St. Louis and Baltimore have twice the rate of Guatemela and Tijuana has about 8 times the rate yet they claim they want to refugees from the violence.

You are comparing a country to cities? The murder rate in Guatemala city is 56. Still, violence is only part of the reason for migration. Economics is the main issue, but there are many others too.

So its the overall rate, and not the individuals probability of being murdered? Uh huh. So if say....Mexico has a higher rate then the US...we should take all of mexico?

Neither violence nor economic need is a viable reason to apply for or to gain asylum though.

Of course they can be fleeing violence but what gets me is that no one (as in the Dems) seems to care about people that live in our dangerous inner cities where they face the same type of economic disparities of no jobs or low paying jobs in their area so government programs are in place for their day to day survival plus they face the same type of gang violence fueled by illegal drugs, criminal activities, a concern for their daughters being raped and their sons being gunned down either by gang members or over zealous racist cops that the Dems tell us are everywhere....

What are these people to do? Can they apply for asylum in Canada?

It just boggles the mind that the Dems can be outraged, shed tears and demand Rights for people that are trying to take advantage of our immigration system but they turn their backs on American citizens and Legal immigrants that are suffering...?

Politics is weird.

The OP is talking about violence, not about asylum. But I'll answer your questions. Immigration to Canada is very easy if you are a professional with some experience. They raised the number of asylum seekers: those who come from war torn countries, or their lives are in danger for political and other social reasons. But for everyone else it's very difficult.

So why are there so many communities left behind, and immigrants let in? Profits. That is what the world economy runs on. Poor communities need a lot of investment, for them to prosper. They are essentially useless eater in the eyes of the people ruling. Immigrants on the other hand create profits. Professionals do the job just as efficient and the developed countries can save on education, training; let poor country worry about that [even if it is in a small scale]. Poor immigrants can do the annoying jobs at a cheaper price. The economist who said: "the economy runs on greed" and the politicians who makes the laws are destroying the lives of people not only in developed countries, but the consequences for poor countries are even worst.

And for those who believe a wall will fix anything, I'll share this:

Having lived in a third world Latin American country myself, I can safely say that such statics are about as reliable as sasquatch sightings made by drunk people.

Just sayin'...

20 years from now the headlines will be how US asylum policy led to a brain drain in Guatemala and impoverished the country. (Please send billion $ over.)
