Well certainly dont ask the blowhard dems, they are happy to accept the consequences of a govt shutdown due to their inaction on the border wall. To them, its much better to shut the govt down than let Trump protect the citizens

By the way, if these are nonessential workers why do they have jobs?
Non-essential, as in not in immediate need, even the private sector has this. My former company for example, the essential employees were the security guards, and those who maintained the IT servers, everyone else, including the CEO, were non-essential. When a winter storm hit, they actually put these people in a hotel next to the company, everyone else had the day off.

In a hospital, doctors, nurses, some staff, but a lot of staff like in HR, finance, janitorial, etc, are non-essential.

I am thinking you are not really understanding what the term means.

Wait.

Didn't WaPo tell us a few days ago that it wouldn't happen? Didn't you Trump haters cite, as fact, and as proof of Trump not keeping promises?

Why the crocodile tears over the shutdown now?

Any employee not involved in either health, safety, or national security is deemed non-essential. So, yeah, an accountant is non-essential, so is a guard at a national park, or a museum employee.

Bizarre post. The WP article was reporting that there would be no shutdown, based on Trump's word. It was silly, of course, for anyone to believe Trump.

My mother inspected radars, bulletproof vests and others as a quality assurance DOD worker and even she wasn't essential. Yet she made sure our troops were protected. This is how messed up essential versus non-essential employees as a debate is.

Do you even follow the news? It was very likely that a shutdown wasn't going to happen based on what was happening Mon/Tues. Trump would have even gotten billions for border security. But T being T, he of course changes his decision on a dime, and decides to shutdown the government on Wednesday/Thurs because his ego couldn't take the bashing from Anne Coulter and Fox News over the fact that he wasn't going to get everything he wanted. It is so reassuring we have a Prez in office who has to show his critics on TV how tough he is and who constantly changes his decisions through Twitter during the wee hours of the morning.

IRS tax returns are usually impacted by shutdowns. Once they go back to work, they are backlogged. Forms(even electronic versions) and calculations and acceptance of tax returns are sometimes delayed because IRS workers didn't get their work done during the shutdown. This backlog can last a couple months for the IRS. People that submit their tax returns early in the new year likely will have to wait because final IRS tax calculations and e-forms won't be ready.

In fact I’m coming back from an international trip on January 3. I wonder what the lines at immigration will be like.
It'll be a nightmare clusterfugg of epic proportions with the TSA and Border agents being denied overtime to process all the flights so they'll respond in their time honoured system of screwing joe public, just like the last time.

Had to fly into the U.S. on the eve of the last "sequestration" and the U.S. agents in Canada held up processing of people from every flight while they sat at their terminals in secondary inspection doing nothing. We sat there for over two hours with them interviewing NOBODY!

Delta partnered with WestJet had to accommodate over 100 people who were delayed and missed their last scheduled flight out and had to find overnight accommodations ($360.00 Pearson Airport Holiday Inn room) the next day. That was just one airline.

You'll enjoy the experience.
