But I doubt he'll do so unless the FED continues raising rates.
I'd argue that even the term "for cause" shouldn't limit the president's power to fire the fed chair. The president is the head of the executive branch and should have full power under our constitution to manage the executive branch, which includes firing members. Congress' check on the executive branch under our Constitution comes via appropriations and the Senate confirming many executive branch officials.
He keeps looking for someone to blame for the market downside, but he just needs to look in the mirror. The trade war and all the chaos he creates with his impulsiveness is a huge factor in the volatility we're seeing on Wall Street.

He can wish all he wants
That isn't happening...
Powell---like Mueller--is a man with a mission
He THINKS he has a chance to correct mistakes that Greenspan began and Bernanke and Yellen allowed to persist --in order to prevent an economic disaster...
Whether he is correct in his assessment and his remedy is sort of up in the air since there are so many viewpoints that don't coincide...
But Powell doesn't seem the type to knuckle under to Trump
I have generally supported Trump since he got in -- but enough with the firings and the staff turnovers. On the other hand anyone who couldn't see that we were due for a market correction was walking around blind and without a cane. It's long overdue.
I would salute this. Powell is a swamp rat of the worst kind. He is bound and determined to make the working class suffer to further line the pockets of the ultra rich. Powell was recommended to Trump by Mnuchin, the slimiest creature in the DC swamp, and Trump did not do his homework on the guy. Trump screwed up royally by appointing this robber baron and needs to correct his error.
A dictator does not really need or want a competent staff, just security to keep them from being attacked and overthrown.
As time goes on, Trump reminds me more and more of Idi Amin who btw, is said to have had mental illness caused by late stage syphilis. Is this this Trump's ailment as well? He sure as heck acts like him.
