They only shut down "non-essential services". Why bother restarting them later? Devolve them to states instead

If these services are "non-essential", then why is the Fed government doing them at all?

States are already taking over some of them during the shutdown. New York is paying to keep the Statue of Liberty open so tourists can go in (and spend money). Other National parks have no park rangers now. Why not just let states take them over?

Some National Parks are entirely within one state, easy to see who should support them, others (Yellowstone etc.) span more than one state.

This would be a great opportunity to turn them over to states, and work out agreements on how those states would take care of them.

What other "non-essential services" are the government shutting down?

You think most states even want them? Have the resources to pay to support them? Won't sell them off to the highest bidder? Do you really think park entrance fees bring in enough revenue to pay the cost of managing the park? Don't be absurd.

You have absolutely no idea how OPM defines "essential" and "non-essential" jobs and services. It's NOT how and what you think at all. SMH

Can't move the IRS to the states.

Same for Border Patrol, US Coast Guard and US Secret Service and the State Department which issues Passports.

I support this. National Parks should be self-funded anyway. No reason why poor people who can’t afford to travel should subsidize wealthy people who can.

The Virginia Department of Taxation does a fine job collecting my share of taxes. The IRS is not needed.

Thats what I was thinking the other day when this news broke, if they are not 'essential Govt duties', why are they full time positions then?

I disagree about how Govt defines 'essential' too...Im sorry, but the FBI, DEA, ATF, etc, those are most certainly NOT essential govt duties, those agencies could be temporarily shut down just like the others, all their work/duties will be there when they get back.

No.

Some beautiful recreational land needs to be public, and open to the public. Otherwise it will go the way of the beaches on South Padre Island or the beaches in Jacksonville Florida.

Completely ruined, crazily overbuilt, ugly, and inaccessible and locked down with passwords and bracelet fobs.
