What makes our current economy worthy of such support? It's not benefiting the majority of the population.

and what is the alternative, Catholic doctrine? is that going to get the masses out of poverty and hunger? it sure hasn't worked out when they were in control in Latin Countries.

and I beg to differ, the majority in our country are doing fine compared to decades and centuries ago. Capitalism and free markets have done more for poverty and hunger in 1 century than the Catholic church has done in centuries. It doesn't even come close.

Well obviously you didn't read the info. at the link I posted. It's very clear things are worse than decades ago. When adjusted for inflation income levels are down, working hours are up, benefits are lacking, vacation time is lacking, health access is lacking. Capitalism and the mythical "free" markets (no they're not free, you're only free to do what a few want you to do in ways they allow which favor the few) have created poverty and hunger. It was capitalism that sent food from Ireland to England or abroad during the Potato Famine which ensured many starved. It's capitalism that hands multi-million dollar bonuses to CEO's of corporations whose employees qualify for food stamps.

There are many alternatives to what we have. Look at western Europe for instance. They still have a form of capitalism but regulations and standards and services that largely eliminate the problems we have here. Perhaps most importantly they have a culture which values taking care of your fellow citizens as opposed to one that glorifies greed.
