VA, MD, and DC are all now blue states, and the GOP didn't need them to win the Presidency. So let's adopt a strategy of putting these federal government workers out of work on a regular basis until we get what we want.

They do still get paid in the end with retro pay when the budget is approved so it is not like anyone is going without unless they are living pay check to paycheck.

As far as a "tactic" goes it was Obama that really got mean during his shutdown. I remember gates being locked and jersey barriers put in place at a national park near me. I understand that there wouldn't be any services open like the visitor center and bathrooms which are not open in the off season anyway but the roads to the beaches were closed.

Today the services are closed as they would be late in December but I can still drive out to have a look at the ocean.

The Obama shutdown was done to cause the general public the most pain while Trumps' shutdown is not as mean spirited.

National parks in Utah and Arizona are open because the state taxpayers are footing the bill during Trump's shutdown. Money is running out, so it's a matter of time before they are locked up.

This pretty much sums up why the GOP should never be in power. This is what passes for governing in their minds. Punish people and take away their livelihood and their ability to support and feed their families if they disagree politically with the GOP, and keep at it until they are forced out of necessity to conform.

Why do so many right wingers hate America so much?

So, if Joshua Tree is losing $30 per carload entering the park--just think of all the revenue the country is losing while Trump sulks.

If one park is affected negatively, can you imagine what all the parks look like.

This is truly a disgrace. It's the Xmas/New Year's break, and visitors (Americans and foreign tourists are greeted with garbage and gross conditions).

This is not MAGA. This is disgusting.

Which the majority of Americans, and presumably quite a few government workers, do...

I can't tell if you're trying to be funny, or you think this is a legitimate strategy.

I do think they'll get back pay this time since the liberals will be in control of the House. But if Republicans control Congress then the non-essential people who didn't work might be denied their paid vacation.

This shutdown isn't even that extensive like the one Obama caused. Only 25% of the federal workforce is affected compared to 100% during the obama shutdown in favor of Planned Parenthood.

I'm sure if this was about Planned Parenthood funding, the liberals wouldn't care about federal workers and would be okay with the shutdown lastly an entire year if that means Planned Parenthood continues to get money.

Talking GOP should shut down government regularly as a tactic

GOP, December of 2016:

"We hold all the levers of government. Now you'll see what one party rule can do. Watch us go to work. The Dems haven't been this far out of power in 90 years. All hail the mighty Pub agenda!"

GOP, December of 2018:

"Not OUR fault the government doesn't work!"

So, what happened, boys and girls?
