You haven’t been out much, have you? Many places have higher cost of living but most people choose to live without their means.

$1200 a month is a lot of money!

In the United States it's not, my one bedroom apartment is more than $1,200/month

Why would any sane person live in a $1200/month apartment when he’s only making $1200?

When I was making $900 a month, I lived in a $250/month rent with a roommate and I rode bicycle to work.

Rent is what the market will bear, not what you can afford necessarily. And I afford my apartment just fine. I make $4,800/month or $1,200/week

How does this answer my question?

Point being is your $900/month living in a $500/month apartment with a roommate can't always work. You can't even get an apartment for $500/month here anymore (you could 6 years ago, but things have changed)
