Reid, who is 79, does not have long to live. I hate to be so abrupt about this, but Reid probably would not mind. In May, he went in for a colonoscopy, the results of which caused concern among his doctors. This led to an M.R.I. that turned up a lesion on Reid’s pancreas: cancer. Reid’s subdued and slightly cold manner, and aggressive anticharisma, have always made him an admirably blunt assessor of situations, including, now, his own: “As soon as you discover you have something on your pancreas, you’re dead.” I had planned to visit Reid, who had not granted an interview since his cancer diagnosis, in November, but he put me off, saying he felt too weak. People close to him were saying that he had months left, if not weeks.

Love him or hate him, he was a servant of our country and we should be thankful for his service. I hardly ever agreed with him views or tactics but I can sympathize with his public service and putting yourself out there like that.

Look I'll say no ill about him but I'm not going to pretend he was a great public servant either. I've seen what cancer can do though and I hope he passes peacefully.

That’s terribly sad. Pancreatic cancer is a horrible lot in life and I don’t wish that diagnosis on anyone.

Pancreatic is one of the worst forms.

I've lost close family and friends to cancer, pancreatic and otherwise.

Sorry to hear about Reid's diagnosis.

Yes it is. I lost a friend last year to it and he was only 46.

I wish Reid comfort in his final days.

As a republican most of my life, I honestly am not a huge fan of Reid. But he was a public servant and hopefully he served his country as best he could. Prayers that he goes peacefully and not in much pain.

Pancreatic cancer is nasty.

You know, whenever I read or hear this phrase, I have to wonder if the speaker has really considered all of its implications.

I'm sorry to hear this. It's not a fate I would wish on anyone.
