Trump has shown the world he could not make a deal to save his life. Trump failed to get his own party to support funding his wall for over 2 years, but Trump is such a fool he really thought he could bully an opposition party to do what his own party would not.
Hopefully Trump has learned his lesson and will not need another public humiliation to learn it.

It’s not a political win for Trump because most people with a functioning brain would disagree with your take. Trump’s base will eat it up, but that’s not really a win because he was never at risk of losing their support. They’d follow him into a gulag.
You think Trump will do something so stupid and harmful to both the country and his ratings again? I don't. I see him declaring the national emergency. That will go nowhere fast in the courts and Trump is likely out of office before it is fully resolved. In the meantime, his base gives him credit for trying and he is off the hook.
That would be the smart play at this point in the game.

Here's what he is doing. He is okaying a temporary opening, so he can have his big man SOTU speech that is more important to him than anyone's life in this country.
After Donny's has his moment in the sun, which will most likely have low ratings from the boycott and be a bust anyhow, and then he will go to Maralago to golf because poor boy has been working so hard watching Fox News.
In three weeks, when it's time to negotiate--he'll go right back to his stupid stance, and I really hope the Dems don't fall for his lies. But I really do hope that during his speech some brave soul yells out "You Lie!"
