If there is a logical argument that socioeconomic racial inequality between blacks and whites is rooted in the history of racial oppression of blacks, then that in and of itself is a logical argument for reparations. What is illogical about it is the expectation. If a racist nation oppressed a race.....why would it then seek to repair the damage unless it was no longer a racist nation, which we know is not true?
Black oppression was proof blacks were not liked. Denying the damage and repair is further proof.
Does being a women keep you from thinking as well as a man? White men oppressing white women did not result in the WHITE FAMILY being oppressed. Your children were OKAY because they had the white man, who was taking everything from others, to PROVIDE for them. White women also gave birth to white males who inherited all the rights and privilege which he can then share with his white mother. Thus, the white women had the white husbands and sons to make sure they had what they needed economically, even if they did not have suffrage or other rights. That is NOTHING comparable to the oppression of a RACE, where the male, female and children were all oppressed economically, culturally and psychologicaly.
What Blacks are doing today has nothing to do with what they were denied yesterday. The debt the govt owes was not erased just bc they eventually got around to treating Black people like full citizens.
As mentioned before, 600,000 thousand people paid the ultimate price to end slavery during the Civil War. The wounds for loosing your ancestors should just have salt poured on them?
You keep referring to "the govt owes" but where do you think the govt gets their funding? FROM THE TAXPAYERS to include MILLIONS of black and brown taxpayers. It's also worth noting that you've yet to address one of the biggest reasons why there are gaps in wealth equality, SINGLE MOTHERHOOD.
71% of black children are born to single mothers. Statistics prove being born and raised in a single parent household hinders children's development, interest in education and future career aspirations and these households are more likely to live in poverty and the children are more likely to use drugs and commit crimes. These statistics are true for all races but there are far more black children born into these households than any other race and you can't blame white people for the choices these single mothers make.
Also mentioned before, there are TONS of resources to help lift people up and help them improve their earning potential but if you do not take advantage of them, it's all on you and nobody else.
Our government has tried with various programs, grants, incentives to correct the injustices of the past.
At some time, people have to help themselves.
Do you live in those places? Are you aware of their efforts?
The vast majority of programs are not specific to African-Americans.
African-Americans have been helping themselves from day one even while others were stealing what they had and denying them opportunities. For example, when the government, denied them schooling, they created their own. Some people are just mad that their efforts to surpass so many hurdles have been successful.
How would reparations work? If you pay the present generation to atone for the sins of the past, what about upcoming generations? Will they get a piece of the action as well? Is this a forever thing?
Germans still pay reparations because there’s still living victims of their mistreatment.
Why is the US paying reparations for something that ended over 150 years ago and everyone’s dead and gone by now?
They only pay those that were directly involved. Our friends grandmother would get roughly $75 a month, when she died so did the payment.
