Wow the story of his children's lives just changed very drastically with that slip of the tongue. The most disturbing thing is that some people will get a sick sense of satisfaction out of that. This is Social Justice.
All white newscasters should be on notice though... in the future it's MLK Park, not Martin Luther King.
I don't think that people should be fired for a slip of the tongue, which I think this was.
That being said, the report says that the station didn't issue any statement for several days, nor did the weatherman.
Had they issued an immediate response, I don't think there would have been any outrage, but they created the problem by just ignoring what had happened.

It should have been ignored. Constantly offended gripers need to be ignored.
I can't speak to this specific situation, but in general, why do we assume the worst possible motive from a person when a mistake or misunderstanding is also possible?
the person is assumed guilty of the most heinous intention possible and no apology or explanation is acceptable. personal annihilation including destroying a person's livelihood is the only appropriate punishment for offending someone...anyone.... regardless of person's intent.
