Really? People in the private sector have been forced to work w/o pay over the past 25-30 years? This is news to me.
That is because Reagan fired ATC who didn't return to work in five days. Conservatives and libertarians already want it to be privatized, this gives them the opportunity to do so.
If it was privatized, then workers can go on strike and form unions and the business class travelers would suffer. I think ATC is one area they want the government to own and enforce like the military where they have no say.
All hell will break loose if air travel were permanently frozen until the government reopened and starting paying people again. And no, you couldn't just hire a brand new batch of noobs off the street to do the job, because you need people with experience, as ATCs are in charge of millions of lives per year. You could try to bring in the military to do it, but then you'd be wasting huge national defense resources for civilian efforts. Meanwhile Russia could just easily fly in fighter planes over our territory due to the distraction of the military towards civilian aviation.
If we privatized ATC, they would bring in H1B's from India that would do it on the cheap and soon after planes would be falling out of the sky.
It must be financially very hard for those workers not being paid during this government shutdown. Anyone who can't sympathize with these people's situation must have a heart of stone.
All White House helpers - cooks, janitors, landscape crew, the guy who keeps Trumps TV sets working, should all be part of the furlough. Trump should feel the same pain as everyone else. Let him clean his own toilet and do his own dishes.

EVERYTHING needs to shutdown, federal workers and military members are allowed leave until it is resolved.
This selective shutdown is a joke since the ones that need to wipe the elites behind and protect their interests are forced to work.
100% wrong. Those Air Traffic Controllers signed contracts stating they would not go on strike. Then they did go on strike. Reagan was right to fire them.
All contracts are reneged on all the time across this country when it comes to the business class so I have no problem with it when the worker class does it.
Got no money for worker promises or pensions, no problem, declare bankruptcy while the suits walk away millionaires. We see this all the time.
Id be curious what would happen if the border patrol, Immigration Passport control, and Coast Guard just all of a sudden disappeared in unison? And left the borders wide open.
I guess Trump would soon find out instead of getting his wall built, his tantrums and bad decisions just left his borders wide open and removed any barrier stopping those caravan or other people he hate or any type of border protection whatsoever. That would teach him a lesson. As he doesn't feed the ones that who help secure the border every day. Insulting these guys who help him secure the border for free to hold garage sales or mystery shop is such a joke.
Think of Firing them! good luck trying to hire all these replacement and retraining them timely especially for slave labor job with no pay at all.

Contract or not, if you are not getting paid, you walk off the job.
If the one person does it, too bad for him since they will come down on him.

The problem is, Individual 1 doesn’t care about anyone other than himself. He lacks the compassion needed for this tactic to be effective. You can tell by his cold responses when asked how he feels about the people working without pay.

Individual 1 lacks human empathy. If everyone strikes, they’ll hurt only themselves and the rest of non-sociopathic Americans.
Chuck and Nancy seem to care more about keeping Trump from having a victory than these federal workers.
The worst they can come up with is the wall is a waste of money and ineffective. Like the Democrats have ever cared about wasting money before.
The wall is all too effective, which is why they refuse to let it be built.
