i'm trying to figure out why trump thinks that hinting at knowledge of someone else's illegal activity but doing nothing about it helps his case.

i doubt this will just come down to cohen's word vs trump's.

Anything's possible....

But something tells me that if Cohen had actual evidence of Trump committing a felony, he would have gotten a MUCH better deal than he did.

In the case of Trump and Cohen, at the outset nobody committed a crime. Donald Trump then told Cohen to commit a crime. Cohen then went ahead and did it at Trump's instruction.

In the case of politicians and illegal immigrants, the politicians did not instruct any particular person ahead of time to immigrate illegally. The people who immigrated illegally did it on their own. It's only after they had already committed the crime that some politicians decided it was OK that they were here. It's more akin to a pardon of an already-committed crime than abetting someone before the fact.

According to the article, Cohen wasn't the only source talking about Trump's instructing him to lie. There is testimony of other witnesses, emails, texts, etc. Mueller is no fool.
