Why even go? Because he was forced to go, by his aides, by his handlers. Just like he was forced to say something civil about John McCain.
We know he's a mean, racist guy, ignorant of history, and unwilling to praise someone unless it reflects on him. But he was forced into it for publicity reasons.

If he didn't go ..... The Leftists would ATTACK
If he makes a Speech ...... The Leftists would ATTACK
If he doesn't make a Speech .... The Leftists ATTACK.

The thing is... if trump said anything positive about anyone but himself at least half the time or even just once in a blood moon, people might think he is sincere about some of it. But as it is, 90% of the time he is grinding on "what will make me look good."
People are not blind. They see him for what he is. That's why he gets little credit.
