The Coast Guard’s top admiral said Tuesday that members of the armed forces should not be expected to shoulder the burden of the partial government shutdown, citing the “anxiety and stress” it is causing military families as their pay is withheld.

Adm. Karl Schultz, the Coast Guard commandant, said that he is heartened by the outpouring of support Coast Guard personnel have received across the country but expects more.

“Ultimately, I find it unacceptable that Coast Guard men and women have to rely on food pantries and donations to get through day-to-day life as service members,” he said, speaking on a video posted to his Twitter account.

The comments marked the admiral’s most forceful remarks about the shutdown since it began 32 days ago amid a dispute over President Trump’s demands for funding for a southern border wall. While the majority of the U.S. military is part of the Defense Department and has funding, the Department of Homeland Security and its agencies, including the Coast Guard, are affected by the shutdown.

"Unacceptable" and unbelievable. This is treating the Coast Guard like some ragtag beggar's army. No pay for "years," food from food pantries - what next? Cake sales and raffle tickets?

I know! Let's make the Army go without pay checks too. They can just take their pay in plunder - that would save enough money that I bet Trump could have another tax cut for his billionaire pals.

Meanwhile the US is treating its public servants more shamefully by the day.

We shouldn't have been here in the first place. It's pathetic the commander in chief would even put his own service members in this situation.

As long as he gets his tower in Moscow that's all the US means to him a bargaining chip for one of our worst enemies.

The military is expected to make sacrifices including their lifes. Joe citizen isn't as Angle Families can attest.
Trump has the right priorities. The admiral does too and he needs to bare the burden he signed up for willingly or resign.

The military isn’t expected to work without pay. Trump does not have the right priorities. Most of the country doesn’t want the wall.

Most of the country didn't elect Trump according to the leftist but he is the President anyway and the Commander in Chief. Trump is putting the lives of the citizens above all else including a paycheck as is his duty. The left is crying over a can of beans while people are dying from their stubborn stupidity.

Fund the wall, it's a no brainer and doesn't hurt the country in any way, shape or form. If you know of a reason it's bad for the country please explain here.

Coast Guard guy knows how government works, this comes with the territory.
