Honestly, the fact that these people are unable to survive for just one month without a paycheck speaks volumes about how the majority of Americans live and how unprepared most are for emergencies. I mean, I hate that their checks are late, but if we'd simply stop living so far beyond our true means we could all be much better prepared for those unexpected problems that sometimes impact our lives. I myself work as carpenter, and I know all about hitting rough patches when the work has suddenly dried up and the next house/project won't be ready for a month or more. I'm actually in one of those patches right now. The area I live in had an extraordinary amount of rain during the months leading up to the new year, which put all the builders I work for behind because they couldn't get foundations poured and other things taken care of because the ground was just too wet. So many projects that should have started to hit in late December/early January have been pushed back by a month or two. So I've basically been forced to beat the bushes and try to find a little side work here and there to help bring a little extra money in while I wait for these jobs to become ready. However, I also make sure to have a cushion saved up for these kinds of unforeseen problems, so while I may not have money to take my kids out to the movies right now, I am able to pay the bills and keep food on the table.

So my question is simple this. If I, a lowly carpenter, can manage to think ahead and prepare for possible problems in the future, then why can't these government workers do the same? Most more than likely make more money than I do. I think the answer is simple. Most Americans live beyond their means, and have no safety net in place if unexpected things happen. These men/women are just as much to blame for their current financial position as anyone in the government is as far as I'm concerned. I'm sure mine is a minority opinion on the subject, but I can live with that. Just as I can continue to live if something happens and my job is temporarily put on hold. I can only hope that this experience will help these workers understand the importance of actually having a financial "safety net" available. Most financial planners recommend having a 3 to 6 month reserve in place. If you have any questions, please visit the website I have posted a link to below. Dave Ramsey knows what he is talking about.

Still, thou shall not judge.

They are employed. They should be paid.

If it is an essential service, such as the Coast Guard or the IRS, or the aircraft inspectors, or ... then pay them.

If it is not an essential service, gives them a month's severance pay and assistance in finding a new job.
Another one out of touch.

Non-billionaire TDE also does not understand why people do this or why so many Americans sympathize with their "plight". If you have a regular job, yet you live beyond your means to the point that you will run out of money for food after missing one paycheck, you are behaving irresponsibly.

Trump intentionally pulls the rug out from under the economy and then a clown like Ross suggests the victims just go and get a loan. I suspect he has some fat-cat banker friends who would be ready to loan some of that tax cut money.

Indeed. Shame on that $10/hr. person for living beyond their means.

Some of us know exactly (I can go toe to toe with you on hard time stories) thats why we learn to start building that nest egg.

No one is saying its their fault. I blame congress.
That's just not true. And yes there are many who get federal jobs right out of college. It's just lower level jobs.
