Chinatown? Miami? Eating lasagna on Christmas Eve? Going to a temple? Going to a Catholic Church? Going to a nondenominational evangelical church? Stay at home mom? Working single mom? Living in a big city, living on a farm? Owning a house? Renting an apartment? Living in a trailer park? Living in a McMansion? Living in a log home on a mountain? A concrete block home near the beach? Owning their own business? Working as a nurse? Working as a laborer? Putting their fork down between bites of food? Enunciating words like northerners? Drawling words like southerners? Wearing a cowboy hat or a baseball cap? Jeans or dress slacks or sweatpants? A tie or a T-shirt? Calling athletic shoes sneakers or tennies? Drinking soda or pop? Celebrating Hanukkah or Easter or Ramadan or Chinese New Year or St Nicholas Day or Halloween or Cinco de Mayo or none of the above?
There is no “American culture.” The USA is filled with people from all countries, of every color, religion, and persuasion. We all live in “real America,” not only those who reside in one particular state. Yes, those living in NYC or Honolulu are every bit as American as those in rural Texas and Wyoming. I know it can be scary to realize that people not exactly like you have the same rights that you do. Have a cookie.

The American culture we should all assimilate into is described in the constitution and Declaration of Independence.
Things like the freedom of speech, freedom of religion, right to keep and bear arms, respect for private property, rule of law, equal treatment under the law, due process, innocent until proven guilty, etc.
Brokaw apologized to save his job, but may be right. Remember that our law schools, graduate schools, and medical schools all conduct their classes in English.
Assimilation is the key to not being targeted by men such as Trump who is happy to keep us divided.
Brokaw is an old white guy, nobody listens to them anymore. What would he know? He just made sure he won't be on TV again. Hispanics should try and assimilate better? That's blasphemy, he must hate Hispanics....
How is it hatred to want any ethnic group to assimilate into our society? That makes no sense at all. We have millions of illegal aliens here most of whom are Hispanics and the more you get of one ethnic group the less they will assimilate. Everywhere I go, Hispanics are speaking exclusively in Spanish who are both here legally and illegally and demanding that they get pandered to in Spanish.
That's one of the reason we need to diversify our legal immigration numbers and quotas and repel illegal immigration. The opposite results in colonization not assimilation.
I lean conservative and I believe that Hispanics do assimilate. Just like every other incoming immigrant group, it takes a generation to happen but it does.
It's not happening though due to the millions of illegal aliens here most of them who are Hispanics.

I am an immigrant and even I know that.
If laws are broken, then yes, those individuals should face appropriate consequences.
Would you say that freedom of speech extends to being able to speak whichever language you want?
I’m not seeing how “Hispanics” as a group are not following the constitution or the Declaration of Independence. Most of what you wrote pertains to rights and not culture.

Let's face it we are not Hispanic, Asian, Eastern European, Arabian, etc. in identity. They are merely minority cultures in our country so why would anyone ask what culture immigrants should assimilate to? Certainly not any of the above.

You are making it too complicated. Just learn English. Maybe celebrate Independence Day or Thanksgiving with your fellow countrymen. It’s not all that hard.
