That's because so many immigrants now share a language. In the past they had to learn English just to communicate with each other, as well as the existing citizens. Nowadays they can already communicate with each other for the most part and increasingly they are finding out they can get by without ever learning to communicate with the existing population at all. This isn't "diversity", it is replacement. Aglophones out, Hispanophones in. Obama phones for all.

Also, the Hispanics I know are not snowflakes like the New York and California liberals. They aren't offended at all by Brokaw's statements. I personally don't think the Hispanics are a problem in this country as long as they are held to the same account as White folks. If they turn them into continual victims like they have with other groups then this whole thing is done because the future of this country is Hispanic heritage. And probably two languages but that is not as big a deal as people think. My grandson at 5 already speaks a lot of Spanish he is learning in pre-school.

Both black an Hispanic Americans have alot of work to do when it comes to assimilation.

By comparison, African immigrants and Asian Americans have no problem assimilating into the dominant culture. Embracing education and self-determination.

This cultural change must happen from within, not even 8 years of Obama could change anything.

Seems very arrogant to me. Like saying “You have to change because of them coming here.”
We see this all of the time. How people are ignorant to someone who immigrated here from a foreign country. Please tell why someone who is minding their own business here should know everything about some guy fresh off a boat? Should we all be expected to learn 300 languages and customs to make them "comfortable"?

Hell no.

Agreed. We shouldn't single out Hispanics. Assimilation should be the goal and a lot of immigrants don't seem to work very hard at it.

I lean conservative and I believe that Hispanics do assimilate. Just like every other incoming immigrant group, it takes a generation to happen but it does.

Never visited a 'ChinaTown', have you?

Which prompts the question, why do they apparently slip beneath peoples demands that immigrants assimilate?

Assimilate to which part of American culture?

Chinatown? Miami? Eating lasagna on Christmas Eve? Going to a temple? Going to a Catholic Church? Going to a nondenominational evangelical church? Stay at home mom? Working single mom? Living in a big city, living on a farm? Owning a house? Renting an apartment? Living in a trailer park? Living in a McMansion? Living in a log home on a mountain? A concrete block home near the beach? Owning their own business? Working as a nurse? Working as a laborer? Putting their fork down between bites of food? Enunciating words like northerners? Drawling words like southerners? Wearing a cowboy hat or a baseball cap? Jeans or dress slacks or sweatpants? A tie or a T-shirt? Calling athletic shoes sneakers or tennies? Drinking soda or pop? Celebrating Hanukkah or Easter or Ramadan or Chinese New Year or St Nicholas Day or Halloween or Cinco de Mayo or none of the above?

There is no “American culture.” The USA is filled with people from all countries, of every color, religion, and persuasion. We all live in “real America,” not only those who reside in one particular state. Yes, those living in NYC or Honolulu are every bit as American as those in rural Texas and Wyoming. I know it can be scary to realize that people not exactly like you have the same rights that you do. Have a cookie.

The failure of the US to declare English as the official language many, many years ago has not helped the situation.
Now it would be virtually impossible

I don't have any idea of what Tom Brokaw meant. I only agree with part of what he said and that has to do with language. Where I live we have a ton of Hispanic immigrants who I believe are mostly legal. Many of them have assimilated very well. We have others that seem to refuse to learn the language, don't stray from the enclaves where they live, and just don't interact much with anyone else. These are the people I see that remain in a struggle and start harboring animosity.
