A positive step after 15 years.

KABUL, Afghanistan — American and Taliban officials have agreed in principle to the framework of a deal in which the insurgents would guarantee Afghan territory is never used by terrorists, which could lead to a full pullout of American troops in return for larger concessions from the Taliban, the chief United States negotiator said Monday.
The negotiator, Zalmay Khalilzad, said those concessions must include the Taliban’s agreement to a cease-fire and to talk directly with the Afghan government, which the insurgents have persistently opposed in the past.

Good news, hopefully the USA can withdraw and the Taliban can resume ruling the country. Maybe the US can partition the country along ethnic lines if Tajiks want to go it on their own and I don't blame them considering how Pashtuns will rule it.

I think they are better off than when this started but I worry about the Taliban's archaic impact on their society. This should not be our problem but hopefully there will be a reasonable compromise.

This is an admission that we failed in Afghanistan.

We got Bin Laden, which was a prime objective. So not entirely. From the beginning, I think it was understood that this had the strong possibility of ending up like a long list of other previous military quagmires with limited upside potential. Occupying the country long term is not beneficial to either, so why go on with it? Remember what happened when the Soviets played occupier in Afghanistan for too long? Remember how many empires in the past collapsed under the weight of their many expensive and exhausting military adventures?

We could’ve gotten Bin Laden without losing a single soldier in Afghanistan.

There was never going to be a victory in Afghanistan, besides we were not there to defeat the Taliban.

The Talibans religious ideology literally doesnt allow for permanent truces or peace with infidels. Per their own dogma any treaty with the US can only be a short term tactical move or feint.

The truth is that we cant leave Afghanistan anytime soon.
