Smollett could be charged with federal mail fraud, which carries its own set of criminal charges beyond what he was facing in the state of Illinois. To be convicted of mail fraud, a prosecutor would need to prove that the actor intended to perform a fraudulent act and that he used the mail purposely to execute it.
Charges for being convicted of mail fraud range from fines up to $250,000 to prison time up to 20 years. Other lesser options include probation or even making restitution. The penalty really depends on the severity of the case and the criminal history of the person or persons involved.
I didn't vote in the poll, but I never believed he wasn't attacked - above is my first post in this thread. I always thought he was probably attacked by some black men.
In his interview with Robin Roberts he actually didn't say that the attackers had on MAGA hats and he didn't say he knew for sure that they were white.
As I noted, black hetero men often attack black gay men. I've known many black gay men who were attacked just because they were gay. It is the main "hate crime" perpetuated by and against black people in America. Nigerians in particular do not agree with or like homosexuality and I felt, upon learning that two Nigerian born brothers were involved that they got their story straight for police and police believed them because there is a stereotype of gay men as "drama queens."
I expected the charges to be dropped or for him to be acquitted if it went to trial as he has always been consistent in his narrative and CPD never provided any evidence that this was not an actual attack on him. The media accounts tried to make it seem like a white on black crime, not Jussie himself. It is another indication IMO of how people jump to conclusions and fail to look at the fine details of a media story.

Smollett had better be careful and have insurance hidden away to keep whoever saved him from prison from silencing him permanently. Three unsolved murders of gay men in the week before the 2008 Dem Primary in Chicago. Same church, no robbery, no apparent motive . Same goes for that crooked Attorney General. Maybe she wants to be Governor and cut a deal but she's swimming with sharks.
If you're a Black man or his family sitting in a Cook County Jail, you should really be pizzed.
