They're originalists. The "under God" stuff was added with all the commie scares in the 20th century. They're not part of the original oaths, or our money, or the pledge of allegiance.

Eisenhower was pretty solid on the whole but he made a mistake with that one.

It is. In a letter Thomas Jefferson sent but it was nothing more than a letter, nothing legal or official. He was actually explaining why the Federal Government could not interfere in a state's association with religion.

The clause also allows an individual to state their beliefs even when involved in government. It gives to all, not just Christians.
