Just as a point of information, here's some coverage of the libertarian/traditionalist split of 50 years ago at the National Convention of Young Americans for Freedom, at which I was in attendance.

Dana Rohrabacher went on to serve 30 years in the House of Representatives

Libertarian leader] Dana Rohrbacher, (center, with glasses), a member of the California delegation, in a shouting match with other delegates over seating of another California delegate at last night's session of the Young Americans for Freedom convention at Stouffer's Riverfront Inn. Young Conservatives Hear Buckley Speech

Factionalism at the national convention of Young Americans for Freedom abated for an hour last night when William F. Buckley Jr., the most prominent spokesman for and a founder of the conservative organization, addressed a packed convention hall. Buckley, who was host to the organizational meeting of the group at his Connecticut home in I960, commended the delegates for their "healthy disagreement," then charged them to reaffirm traditional conservative principles. He said those principles included faith in the due process of law and an open market of ideas and economics. He called for the abolition of the graduated income tax and minimum wages. Best for America "The historical responsibility of conservatives is to defend what is best for America," he said, "and that is what our business should be about." Buckleys speech was interrupted by applause when he called for an end to the income tax and again when he criticized the New York Times. His speech was the only respite from strife between factions that continued in today's activities. The libertarian faction made public an alternative platform to the traditionalist philosophy that is expected to be adopted Sunday at the end of the convention. Planks of the alternative platform include a statement against the draft, a statement urging more campus freedom and election of all national directors by the convention delegates. Ed Butler attempted to bring the factions together in a movement of "constructive confrontation" against campus radicals. Butler, a spokesman for a movement called "Square," urged at a press conference that YAF members forget their differences and participate tomorrow in a "March to the Arch," to show solidarity against demonstrations by campus New Left radicals. The most dramatic evidence of the factionalism came minutes before the Buckley speech when Pat Dowd, a former California state chairman of the organization, was stopped from seating himself with other state chairmen at the table flanking Buckley. Dowd, who was dismissed two weeks ago by national chairman Alan McKay, is considered a leader of the libertarians. This faction wants to reduce emphasis on aggressive anti-communism and align the organization more with popular student movements, such as opposition to the war in Vietnam and the legalization of marijuana.

Minority Group

The libertarians are considered a minority at the convention, which delegates say is dominated by traditionalists, who are the more conservative faction in the conservative organization. Dowd strode up the convention hall aisle, with a group of h1s supporters chanting "We want Dowd," but was stopped by a group of young men who shouted, "Turn around and sit down." The two groups confronted each other for about 30 seconds in front of the lectern, while delegates booed and cheered. Then Dowd, a graduate student in political science at Sacramento State Co11ege, led his group to the back of the hall. Besides the traditionalists and libertarians, other groups were expounding their philosophies to the young delegates. Anarchist Group Karl Hess IV, a University of Virginia law student who heads a small group of anarchists, arranged a meeting of delegates: at 11 p.m. beneath the Gateway Arch. His father, a former speech writer for Senator Barry M. Goldwater, addressed t h e meeting. Two candidates for the national board of directors withdrew in protest against national board policies. Harvey Hukari, chairman of the organization's Stanford University chapter, charged that the nationa1 board was "attempting to keep delegates from egressing at their will." David Walter, a former Pennsylvania state chairman, said "I would be ashamed to have my friends think I approved of the patent frauds, purges and hypocrisy engaged in by these people".

And an editorial from those times: (we took Mr. Rockwell up with regard to his suggestion)

1. The single most important thing for a decade was balancing the Budget.
Then - it not only wasn't, but conservatives cheered when TRILLIONS are/were borrowed...and they have went totally quiet on it.

2. Conservatives always ran on one big issues - family values. That was until Newt (who impeached Clinton) and couple others in high places in Congress were caught boffing their interns. Now, they STILL preach morality to others while supporting a POTUS who is....when it comes to any form of morality....in the bottom 1%.

3. They have preached against NYC Values, Limo Liberals and all that type of stuff.
But, again, they approve of Trump....no one on earth could represent those values closer!

4. They have declared, for decades, that there IS a right and wrong and morality is clear. There is a right answer to everything.
Again, I point to Trump. Not only do they accept all the stuff known as fact, but ANY lies...no matter how many thousands, are OK...the ends justify the means in their view.

5. They have preached against Big Government....and then, even besides borrowing more trillions from our children, they are right in front of your face always calling for more money to enforce their Authoritarian ways. From Executing Drug Dealers to Sea-to-Sea walls.....if it's about big government, they are for it.

6. They have preached for Free Trade Capitalism .....always one of their biggest loves. NOW...instantly, they support the tariff king, nationalism, isolationalism and unilateralism.

I could come up with a lot more - but that seems to cover many of the biggest issues they claimed higher authority on.

Cutting taxes without cutting spending = putting spending on the Federal credit card = increasing the national debt.

You think money grows on trees? When I don't take as much salary, I cut my spending. Typical conservative mentality is to push bills on to someone else and pretend nothing happened when trillions are added to the national debt. They cut taxes and INCREASE spending

You've proven that once again modern conservatives are fiscal hypocrites
