Under the National Emergencies Act, or NEA, both chambers of Congress can pass a resolution terminating any presidentially declared national emergency. So if Trump declares a national emergency, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi can trigger a process that could require the GOP-controlled Senate to hold a vote on such a declaration by Trump, which would put Senate Republicans in a terrible political position.

Quote:
GOP senators would have to decide between going on record in favor of a presidential declaration of a national emergency for something that everyone knows is based on false pretenses, a move that would be opposed by two-thirds of the country, or opposing it and possibly forcing a Trump veto (which they then would have to decide whether to override), enraging Trump’s base.

Both Senators Mitch McConnell and John Cornyn have warned Trump such an action would deeplyl divide the GOP and that Trump would suffer major defections in such a vote.

I actually hope Trump tries this. It could finally force the GOP's hand.

Personally, if Trump continues delaying action on what he terms an emergency, I think he should be called on the carpet and asked to explain his dalliance, sounds like dereliction of his duty to me.

Good point. If it's such a "national emergency," why does Trump continue to "weigh his options," still deciding on whether or not he wants to go the declaration route.

If it's a national emergency, shouldn't he be doing it now?

And even if he does declare the state of emergency, it'll be weeks if not months before construction of "The Wall" starts.

Donald Trump is such a stupid person.

it really shouldn't be considered a national emergency by President Stupid, if it were, he'd probably wouldn't wait so long to show a little backbone and do something. No, it's more of a National Something-Not-Very-Serious-At-All.

Someone will shoot up a place with a handgun and they'll ban assault weapons.

Every knowledgeable border patrol official and agent in our nation agrees that we are dealing with a crisis on our Southern border that must be dealt with sooner than later. Just months ago the left wing media wouldn't shut up about the crisis on our Southern border when a few illegal alien children were separated from delinquent parents or human trafficers but as soon as President Trump started to call it a crisis the media has changed their tune acting like there's no issue whatsoever. The American people are sick and tired of this bull****, it's time to secure the border and if democrats want to stand in the way of progress and security we should use them as road base for the wall.

The American people know there's no emergency. But by all means, encourage Trump to declare a national emergency. I look forward to the fallout.

Same. Would all but end his presidency, much less hurt his chances for 2020.
