It was a great idea two centuries ago. But now, even apart from the issue of how differently information is spread now, it seems to me that presidents never really make any major specific announcements. Right? Or not?

Or, maybe even if presidents just make grandiose announcements of vague plans, is it still a good idea to try to force most of the country to stop what they're normally doing and listen?

I like the fact that Trump irritates the TDS sufferers...I think it may be good for them to watch and throw things at their tv's

There's no point except it allows both sides to b*tch and moan and gives the talking heads something to talk about.

Yeah, Trump should just Tweet out his SOTU. It would be easier on his audience and less pressure on the old geezer himself. Gawd knows how much Adderall he'll have to snort to get through tonight's speech.

You seem to be missing the point of the question - even though I do agree that for many Trump supporters, their approval seems to be fairly ignorant, mostly based on admiring the way he riles up people, without any regard for the damage he does.

No! I don't think I've watched the SOTU in at least 15 years. It's the stupidest, most pointless thing imaginable. I'm sure when the Founding Fathers added it to the constitution it might have been a good idea, but all it's ended up being is to give the president a chance to spout his own propaganda. That's the last thing I want to hear.

And that even goes for presidents I've liked. Can't stand watching them no matter who is president.

No, I didn't miss the point of the question and I agree with that premise other than as I stated, seeing Trump giving the SOTU is good for the TDS sufferers.

I'll get the highlights of the SOTU the next day. I don't go out of my way for a speech unless there is a giant Independence Day UFO over the White House.
