It doesn't matter if he 'promises' or not. He can change his mind. If voters don't like it, in 2020 they can vote him out. But pushing for his tax returns - something not required to be president - is a dereliction of their job to actually legislate. This is basically a political spitball fight being financed by the American taxpayer.

He doesn't want you to know his tax returns. That's his right. But the government already has his tax returns, for all the years he has filed. If there was a crime, they know about it. Releasing them to the public changes nothing except to satisfy your curiosity. But it's really not your right to force him - if you want, vote him out.
Congress has their own powers and responsibilities, demanding to see the tax and financial records of the president, is not one of them.

(f) Disclosure to Committees of Congress
(1) Committee on Ways and Means, Committee on Finance, and Joint Committee on Taxation
Upon written request from the chairman of the Committee on Ways and Means of the House of Representatives, the chairman of the Committee on Finance of the Senate, or the chairman of the Joint Committee on Taxation, the Secretary shall furnish such committee with any return or return information specified in such request, except that any return or return information which can be associated with, or otherwise identify, directly or indirectly, a particular taxpayer shall be furnished to such committee only when sitting in closed executive session unless such taxpayer otherwise consents in writing to such disclosure.
I say we see ALL elected official's taxes if we are going to go down this road and they need to release them EVERY election cycle so we can see how they are getting rich. Since bribes and kickbacks won't be counted as income (hidden) we would see very quickly how corrupt most really are when they go from a net worth of 175k/yr to millions.
Demanding Trump's tax returns is futile.
They ain't gonna get them, and most Republicans do not care. Dems just want the tax returns so that they can find something to become outraged about. No one will ever see them, just as no one will ever see mine.
Dems should tend to legislative business.
This is a low point in our nation's history. The Democrat controlled House hates the sitting president. They are willing to use their power to demand his financial records, and those of his billion dollar corporation, all the while not being able to cite any reason for it?
This is just so they can look thru it and try to find something they can use to gain a political advantage over him.
I'd like the dems to cite where any of this falls under their powers.

Let the Dems go nuts with investigating Trump. It will only help Trump in 2020, as well as the GOP retaking the house.
The repubs at least learned their political lesson, when they were over the top in going after Clinton.
