Violent crime is way down in San Francisco, according to the latest police statistics. But one major category is bucking the trend: police recorded a 170 percent jump in reports of human trafficking in 2018. The huge spike appears to be connected to the federal shutdown of sex-for-sale websites. The goal of shutting them down was to curb human trafficking. Instead, it seems to have had the opposite effect.
They’re hardly hiding in the shadows. Every Friday night, Shotwell Street in San Francisco’s Mission District is lined with prostitutes and their pimps.
Until April of last year, sex workers said they had a much safer alternative: websites like Backpage.com, where they could find clients as easily as swiping right on a dating app.
But after Backpage was linked to sex trafficking of underage girls, lawmakers in Washington voted almost unanimously to make it illegal to advertise sex work online.
“All these sites disappeared in the matter of a couple of days,” said Maxine Doogan, a longtime Bay Area sex worker.
Doogan says Backpage took prostitution out of the dark ages. “You could see this person is legitimate, you could get verification if they were a good customer, a safe customer,” said Doogan.
Now she says the new laws, named the Fight Online Sex Trafficking Act (FOSTA) and Stop Enabling Sex Traffickers Act (SESTA) are forcing sex workers back onto the street and into the hands of pimps.
This is just another example of laws being created that benefit criminals or criminal organizations, it makes me wonder if this was the real goal all along, and they just made it look like they were doing for the good of public health and safety.
They do the same thing with drug laws, lawmakers, DEA and other narco LE claim they are in place to protect public health and safety, but in reality, they benefit drug cartels and push prices up...without those tough drug laws, the cartels would not have such a profitable market.
This is really something citizens need to be more outraged and upset over, its essentially govt using our system of justice and laws, to benefit criminals and criminal organizations, if that isnt aiding and abetting Im not sure what is!!
The Washington Post claims a Republican rep named Ann Wagner is responsible for it:
Quote:
The bill was filed last year by Rep. Ann Wagner (R-Mo.) and eventually attracted 176 co-sponsors. Wagner said she first became involved in the issue when she served as U.S. ambassador to Luxembourg, and learned of sex trafficking occurring in Eastern Europe. Upon returning to Missouri, she found that “sex trafficking is hiding in plain sight, and as this horrific crime moved from the streets to the Internet, it’s become even more prolific.”
New Study Says The Removal Of Craigslist Erotic Services Pages May Be Linked To An Increase In Murdered Females

Under the guise of targeting sex traffickers, FOSTA has both done damage to Section 230 protections and sex workers' literal lives. The law has yet to result in any credible, sustained damage to human trafficking, but that hasn't stopped the bill's supporters from trotting out debunked numbers anytime they need a soundbite.
There will likely be no studies performed by the government to determine FOSTA's actual impact on sex trafficking, but plenty of academics are offering evidence that pushing sex work further underground is endangering the lives of sex workers. This is just the icing on the stupid, life-threatening cake as multiple law enforcement agencies -- including the DOJ itself -- pointed out passing FOSTA would make it more difficult to hunt down traffickers.
They’re hardly hiding in the shadows. Every Friday night, Shotwell Street in San Francisco’s Mission District is lined with prostitutes and their pimps.
Why would they be "hiding in shadows" or lining the streets of San Fransisco??
They should be in State regulated brothels - Prostitution is legal in California isn't it?
If it's not illegal, just follow the law and prosecute pimps, hookers, johns.
They shut down the online sex arrangement websites because they were Trafficking Children.
Now the Leftist Moral Authority in San Francisco is fighting back - apparently raping children is one of those Free Speech Human Rights .... who knew?
It's a Lefty thing, kinda like killing babies during birth or late 3rd trimester.
Several human rights organizations and an advocate for sex workers are now suing the government to overturn the FOSTA and SESTA laws, calling them unconstitutional for violating free speech rights.
Prostitution and human trafficking are two different things.
