Also, I will note........what you are describing is not Capitalism. It's the worse kind of economics. A blend of Crony Capitalism, Crony Socialism.

Why is it that they will not compete on equal footing with other businesses? Could I get such a huge break? Will I get shipping services at below costs? Can I get millions and millions in government contracts to be able to afford to undercut others?
I don't want the cluster fk that comes with it, some people don't mind or even like it.

It's funny how a socialist program like this has become so popular with the "capitalists".

You can argue this is what happens. Wal Mart put many other businesses out of business. While true, it shows my statement is true.
You’ve been told already, you know this, it’s not socialism. You’re referencing the Trump statement on USPS shipping by Amazon? That’s rich from someone who hates Trump but go back and find that thread. Thought it was proved pretty solidly Amazon was not being subsidized on shipping and in fact, parcel shipping was the only successful sector in the USPS.

But keep on trying to act like you’re bringing up salient arguments which are laughably ill-formed. I’m sure you’ll feel pleased with yourself much as AOC feels pleased with herself right now. Ignorance is bliss, right?

She is that financially illiterate.Does she seriously think Amazon will give the $3 billion in tax breaks it is now not going to get to NYC ?

How much does Boston University get paid for an economics degree? What on earth are they teaching?

Ocasio-Cortez graduated from the College of Arts & Sciences in 2011, with a degree in economics and international relations.

More importantly why didn't the cretin on TV who was interviewing her ask this basic question

To be fair, she's part of the way there; she just can't seem to connect the dots. She's right that New York's subway system badly needs upgrading. For New York, it's a matter of urgent necessity; if the subway grinds to a halt, the city (or at least the economic engine of Manhattan) will soon grind to a halt, or near-halt, as well. And she's also right that if Amazon came, and paid the $3 billion in taxes, that money would be available for such things as subway upgrades. (Whether the politicians would use it for that purpose, instead of wasting it on who-knows-what, is a different question.)

What she can't see, in her binary black-and-white world, is that it's not just a choice of squeezing tax money out of Amazon or not doing so. She doesn't seem to understand that Amazon, like everyone else, can be swayed by incentives and disincentives. It was apparently worth it to Amazon to set up shop in New York if they got their tax breaks, but it wasn't worth it to them if they didn't. Just the fact of being New York City, in and of itself, wasn't enough of a draw.

There's something else that has apparently eluded her as well: that "X" percent (whatever New York's tax rate is) times 0 is $0. Now that she and her ilk have chased Amazon away, they'll have to look elsewhere for the money to fix up the subway.

Exactly. A significant percentage of the tech employees in the Seattle HQ are foreigners and transplants.

The locals are simply waved aside.

I don't buy the story of Amazon getting their feelings hurt so they bailed. They held a year long bidding competition just to get NYC to give a tax break.

They took soo much crap from other cities, blasted by Mayors and Governors all over the USA, but all of a sudden one cranky congressman was the straw that broke the camel's back.

Honestly I feel like this was the plan all along. Just wanted access to DC for lobbying, there never was a need for a HQ in NYC, just some form of a cooperate presence and offices to use for business is all they really needed. Same as they have currently in NYC.

This story stinks more and more by the day, something is not right here. Bezos stood up to the National Enquirer who had pics on this guy, but is scared of a freshman congressman who represents a small area of NYC.

Do you have the stats? And how are you defining transplants? Is a new University of Washington CS graduate considered a transplant?

Also, NYC has an abundance of existing tech talent, which is one of the reasons why Amazon targeted LIC. It's just as likely that HQ2 recruiting would draw talent from other, existing NYC companies, creating vacancies in smaller firms, companies that would be even more likely to recruit locals.

and so it begins, although it seems he is angry at the wrong person here, perhaps he should be asking AOC to reimburse him vs being mad at Amazon.

"Sam Musovic had invested over a $1 million in his property, anticipating the economic boost that HQ2 was expected to bring, according to a statement released Friday. Amazon said it would have created 25,000 jobs in the area, paying an average of $150,000 a year."

"The property owner made the investment “only for Amazon to stand him up on Valentine’s day — and leave him with nothing but the bill and a broken heart,” the statement added."

I’m thrilled that a major American city stood up to extortion. I really hate these kinds of deal.

The little guys? The median wage for the 25,000 employees was supposed to be in the vicinity of $150,000 per year.
The temporary tax breaks Amazon received would have been a drop in the bucket compared to what we would have received in return. Amazon wasn't even going for the opportunity zone credit they could have received.

The move had wide support from the people of New York. The politicians who have become known for social issues should have stuck to those, and not interfered in what they know nothing about.

This is a huge loss for New York, one that we can sustain, but we shouldn't need to.
There are many upset Democrats now, and I'm with them.

This needs to be a one-off mistake.
