The Amazon pay would on the most part would be high enough that the workers wouldnt want to be in a union. The NYC. Unions said we will have a Union Shop..WITH THAT Amazon backed out
Unions are losing ground in NYC; and this current progressive liberal democrat mayor along with equally so city council and their leader (both current and present) have been trying to push back against that tide.
Non union labor has made big gains in one of the last strongholds (the construction trades), gaining ever increasing shares of all the new buildings going up. https://therealdeal.com/issues_artic...-a-crossroads/
Then you have the healthcare/service worker unions such as 1199 and 32BJ. All are fighting because many new businesses or whatever aren't union shops. Union membership in NYC is only about 20% of workforce. Much of that is because again local state and city politicians (at least democrats) are in bed with and cannot survive politically without union support.

AMZ’s HQ2 jobs ( like most corporate HQ jobs) would be exempt/ salaried positions, not eligible for collective bargaining.
The unions are focused on the prize, unionizing the 125,000 hourly employees at fulfillment and sortation centers throughout the US. It should be noted seasonal hiring at AMZ is declining due to continued investment in and testing of robotics.
It is also likely that some fulfillment/ sortation centers will eventually close as increased robotics are employed.
Walmart has been the largest private sector employer in the US for more than 30 years and is viciously anti- union, in the US. Despite this, Walmart is a union shop in the UK, Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Chile, China and South Africa, where governments are far more supportive of organized labor than state and federal governments are in the US. Walmart has been known to withdraw from areas when employees vote in favor of collective bargaining.
AMZ’s relatively rapid rise to the #2 position in terms of private sector employment has made them a serious priority for organizers. Unlike Walmart, robotics have a substantially greater opportunity to eliminate jobs at AMZ, over time.
Quit trying to turn this into a full socialist country.
Just pointing out regional differences in mindsets, nothing more.
CD makes it clear and easy to observe.
Capitalism, Socialism, Communism, whatever. There will always be those that live in the nicer homes; shop, wine and dine at the better establishments and so on.
I'm confident I would be one of them regardless of the -ism that plays out.
What is different is that Nashville legislators have, for the most part, ignored the noise and have not jumped on the bandwagon, as a vocal minority did in NY.
Nashville is a blue city in a red state.
TN has a lot of problems including low wages. Poor medical system.
"Most of the state’s problems stem from poor economic conditions and rural populations. For those reasons, it ranks among the worst states in the country for health care access."
I lived there for a couple years.
They need whatever they can get. They should take the deal. There are a lot of people who would qualify (more blue, as you suggest) for higher end positions there...and they will work cheaper.
Does "mounting opposition" mean they wont get favorable tax conditions like they might in another location?
From someone who lives in NYC...
Opposition came from local city politicians, activists along with certain residents of Queens. Their largest beef was that the deal with Amazon was done with nil City Council involvement and pretty much handled by the governor and done deal from behind "closed doors".
NYC politicians are famous for shaking down any business to get their taste. More so the past five years under current mayor and city council there has been a thing about "equality" and preventing "inequality" in NYC. That is the great masses of unwashed and their supporters don't want to be gentrified or whatever out of the city. This is happening anyway, but there you are.
As stated previously Amazon realized what time it was and bailed; this rather than look at years or decades of every single GD thing they did being scrutinized by activists and local politicians.
Again Mr. Jeff Bezos had a lucky escape. It takes some other businesses years to realize the city and state run their company, not themselves.
I mean, I never understood why Amazon picked NY. Pick one of those states that are desperate for jobs and they will give you every tax break under the sun.
I do get why this is an issue. Why should Amazon get socialism from the taxpayers when the rest of American fends for itself? BEZOS ~ we will fund to the hilt - sick americans without health insurance - well, not so much.
