It's in Washington, DC, a town that is majority African American. I'd think such a move would win them votes locally, to the extent that is allowed - DC is under the thumb of Congress and doesn't have a lot of local autonomy.

They want to change the name because he believed in segregation ??

I don't understand these SJW's wanting to erase history.

I do understand how the name Woodrow could be offensive to some because Woodrow to his friends would be "Woody" and we all know that a "woody" is a slang word for an erect male reproductive organ or "penis"..

I can see how those that were born without a penis and really want one or those people that despise penis would be highly offended by the name on that high school.

I think they should tear that school down to erase all memory of that terrible trigger image of the Wood man

Signing the Federal Reserve Act should make Wilson a hero to both Team Red and Team Blue.

It's not every day you get to be turned into a socialist at gunpoint.

3 cheers for WW!

If the locals want to rename it, it's up to them.

In San Francisco, the community is pushing to rename a playground named for a racist politician who pushed for the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act. If you got the clout, you can do it.

I am an alum. Surely my POV counts for something.

It was 75% African-American when I was there. Why was this not an issue then?

Oh my!

Facts are facts, wherever they are found.

Wilson was very much a man of his time and place. He was one of the most progressive Presidents ever, but that never changed his racist mindset. 100 years ago, his racism was common in both parties and in all regions, too.

There's no good in denying the truth, and the truth doesn't change Wilson's accomplishments a whit. Despite his bigotry, he got a lot done for his country. I see no reason why that shouldn't count just as much as anything else.
He was no saint, but after so many years, changing the name of an old high school seems silly to me and superficial. It's whitewashing bigotry. Racism only continues when it's allowed to be covered up and forgotten.

The kids who attend Woodrow Wilson would be better served if they were all taught about Wilson and all his contradictions. Truth kills racism.

I think Wilson was a fairly bad President. There was no need to enter WWI and the Jim Crow speaks for itself.

But ... everybody has a mixed legacy. They named the place to honor a President and he was that. For crying out loud his widow was at the naming ceremony.

If DC has a statue of Marion Barry, then they can tolerate a school named after Wilson.
As soon as I finish this post I'm heading down to Jones Point Park under the Woodrow Wilson bridge for some hikin' and bikin'. Here in Alexandria we have a number of streets and schools named for slave owners and confederate generals. It would cost millions of dollars to change every name that offended someone. Sometimes the best policy is to let some things slide. Or as a famous Washingtonian once said "get over it".

Many things are "local matters," yet we still discuss and express opinions on them. A woman calling police on a group of people having a barbecue is a "local matter" but it was broadcast and disseminated hither and yon.
