No, letting kids HAVE THEIR OWN WAY. Is the mistake. Meeting halfway is “ok, I see where you stand, I understand, but let me show you why your wrong.”
In the end the kid sees things different and has more respect for you than an adult that wants to simply assert his dominance because that’s the only power he can have over anyone.
The teachers I remember the most are the ones that took the time to understand their students.

They mention in the article that the boy "threatened violence", but I don't see it in the teacher's statements. She "got tired" of dealing with his refusal to stand and state the pledge.
Unfortunately the taxpayers are going to get stuck paying off a huge settlement . Courts have ruled consistently that a student does not have to repeat a pledge.
Perhaps the student went overboard but the teacher is supposed to be the adult.
That's what's wrong with our country. Meeting a kid halfway. Thats what has emboldened these kids to threaten and attack teachers. Kudos to the teacher for having the cops called when he threatened her.
11? 11 yr old kid. Are you also that afraid of a small kid??
The student was arrested for threatening the teacher, not for his views.
Remember when schools used to be respectful places? Those days are long gone with narcissist people encouraging this sort of stupidity in our classrooms, with parents fully supporting such grandstanding.
My son is a teacher. There is no discipline in the schools; parents will sue a school district if they try to make up for thier terrible parenting and try to instill some respect or structure in thier lives.

Any teacher who isn't smart or clever enough to handle and teach an 11 yo has no business in a classroom.
She must have missed a few days in her training. Competent teachers have trained to turn these incidents into teaching moments.
