It's not brilliant, nor is the electoral college. The Constitution has had numerous amendments, and it's time for a few more.

Why is this even a topic for discussion? Because of one guy's opinion?

I'm sure that never happened when Senators were appointed ...

The Founding Fathers were not Prophets of God (indeed, many of them were Deists, not quite atheists but certainly not conventional Christians). Nor is the US Constitution as it now stands Holy Scripture. That means it's OK to amend it, have it change with the times.

"toothless hillbillies"... this just tells you their need to ridicule others to make themselves feel more important. Didn't hear a peep from 2009-2016.
It has been an ongoing discussion for decades, and definitely arose between 2009-2016.

Why is it that in modern politics, only the GOP has lost the popular vote and won the electoral college?

Coincidence?

Wow, the Atlantic is really flailing for readers.

Based upon the tenor of the terror, I wonder how much longer they have left before going under?

P.S. I've read the Atlantic a fair bit. My late father in law had a subscription.

so we have more stupidity by the "pundits" who think they know better than the founders who wrote the documents.

lets break up the united states

lets abolish the electoral college

lets change the way senators are put in office(already done)

now its lets change the number of senators for each state, never mind that these things have worked for more than 200 years, but now that the progressives got butt hurt when trump beat the latest anointed one, and when bush43 beat the previous anointed one, they want to change things so that they always win elections.

in other words, if you dont like the rules of the game, change the rules so they suit you. it seems to work for five year olds.

The concept of the Senate was to mirror the House of Lords. Senators were appointed, not voted into office, until 1906. The idea was to have two individuals at the national level to represent the land mass of the US who were independent of national influence.

Voting for US Senators has introduced a national corruption to that office, such that influences outside of the state can determine US senators.

It is interesting that the left would support such a measure, as well as eliminating the electoral college, as they are fascists at heart.

Liberalism = Fascism
Appointed senators is tyranny. States like Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, Virginia, Arizona, Montana, and Nevada(and to an extent, Washington, new Hampshire and Maine ) would all have appointed Republican senators after the last legislative sessions in 2012, 2014,2016, and 2018.

All of those states have atleast one Democratic Senator elected by the people but have (or did have during the listed years) State chambers controlled by Republicans that would have chosen Republicans to serve in the US senate because of gerrymandered state House and senate seats.

If you want the senate picked by the state legislature, i suggest you first make the state legislature look more like the population they are supposed to represent by removing gerrymandering and have more compact districts.

All it would take is one amendment that changes how congress is apportioned and its number of chambers. That is it. Im not saying I support it. Im just saying you obviously wouldnt have to start over as you claim.
