See, but that's where the MSM and their distortion of the truth comes into play. The popular mainstream media notion that it fed to the masses is that it is the Republican party that has veered to the extreme right. If anything, the Republican party has drifted slightly left and is by far the more centrist party. Meanwhile, the reasonably liberal/centrist Democratic party of 20 oor 25 years ago represented by a liberal, yet moderate but reasonable Bill Clinton is long gone. It's been replaced by a far left, socialist tribal party that rewards and punishes people according to their racial, lifestyle victim status.
Today's Democratic party is obsessed with identity politics. Solidly conservative people and Republicans were asked to be tolerant of gays, different races, abortion rights, etc which was reasonable and they have more or less done so recognizing that gay marriage, reasonable abortion rights, and racial equality should be tolerated and especially in the case of racial equality should be encouraged. The problem is that you can't give the Left an inch. No longer is tolerating for example gay marriage and abortion enough for the Left, they demand open celebration and endorsement of these things or they will destroy you. Offer to serve gay customers any cake in your store but refuse to specifically participate and endorse a gay marriage on the grounds that it goes against your conscience and everything your religion stands for? Not acceptable!!! Instead of going to about a dozen different bakeries or florists in the area who will participate they instead choose to vindictively shut a business down by suing the owner out of existence. Tolerate abortion? Fine, conservatives will do that. Not good enough for the Left. If you don't support and openly celebrate a women's right to abort a baby days before it is due to protect a women's "mental health" you hate women according to the Left. Don't support Medicare for all or a Green New Deal that together will cost at least $40 TRILLION dollars over the next 10 years and will destroy the America economy while simultaneously exploding an already out of control national debt? You're racist and hate poor people and want to destroy the earth and see people die. Want to enhance border security and slow down the unchecked flow of illegal immigrants and lethal drugs with a one time expenditure of a few billion dollars to build a wall which less than 10 years and was widely supported by several Democratic politicians? You a hateful xenophobic bigot who hates brown people.
In short, the Democrat party is the one that has gone rapidly to the extreme, not the Republican party. The demonization of straight, white males that dare disagree with how to solve the aforementioned problems is just further illustration of that fact.
