Voters in some of those states will have the power to repeal abortion ban. I doubt any ban that does not allow an exception to save the life of the mother will last for many years.
I think overturning R v W would increase the divide. Now you'd have 50 different fights instead of one. And these fights would carry over into Congress, since so much medical funding comes from the federal budget.
In other words, Congress would be asked to pass a constitutional amendment to ban abortion nationally. That likely won't happen. I never hear of any red state congress people trying to promote it.
So what would you want? For states to settle it like Ireland did and only allow abortions up to the 12th week? States allow it for considerably longer than that.
Same-sex marriage angers a lot of people but I think overall America will be able to live with it provided that businesses are allowed to discriminate on religious grounds (yes, we will probably have to concede this to the Christian Right in the coming years). However I believe abortion is the one no-compromise issue and I wonder if overturning Roe v Wade is necessary at this point in order to bring some sense of civility back to politics. Blue states can allow abortions and red states can ban them. Meanwhile 40% of the country won't have to continue to support a madman for the greater good of ending abortion. The Christian Right will lose much of its reason for existing as a political bloc once Roe v Wade is overturned. Getting religion out of politics is at the top of the list with a bullet exactly what this country needs right now. Note that I don't support the overturn of Roe v Wade, I'm just being realistic about where we are at right now.
No personal offense is intended, but I think you are far from being realistic.
Worse, you are conflating an issue like abortion with an entire group of Americans who undoubtedly have many other reasons for voting for moderates/conservatives than just one issue alone. To believe that "red state America" only exists because of the abortion issue is either very naive, or intentionally obtuse.
Roe is settled. And no way in hell I'm going to let go of it in order to make a group of dimwits happy.
Amen. People need to quit running to government to ban all abortion. Haven't they heard that the government can't do anything right? Ireland must have thought the same thing when voters there overwhelmingly repealed their ban on abortion last year.
Since running to government can't do it, it's up to people who think abortion is murder to please practice personal responsibility when they want sex but not a baby. I've read of some women who demonstrate at abortion clinics, later get pregnant and go get abortions. Their hypocrisy is so disgusting.

I'm pretty sure that if SCOTUS overturns R v W, the next step would be to try to pass a personhood amendment. And there are plenty of conservatives who advocate that. It's unlikely that a voter who believes that abortion is murder will be OK with the state next door allowing abortion.
IMO, the only thing that will calm the abortion debate is the decline of fundamentalist religion.

You have a good point here. It's naive to think that overturning Roe v Wade would settle the issue. The next step would be a constitutional amendment to ban abortion in all 50 states.
I agree that the ideal thing would be the decline of fundamentalist religion at least in politics. In another decade or two, the Christian Right will no longer have the numbers to influence politics like they do now.
The Republicans don't anyone controlling anything supposedly yet they love Roe vs Wade where they can control who has babies and who doesn't. Hypocritical.
The Christian right is about CONTROL. They want to make this country a Christian version of Sharia. But more and more people have come to realize that and oppose it.
