Correct me if im wrong, but Trump didn't have a strawman bidder there to necessarily buy it, but rather to increase the bid so it was the highest price of the day-which means someone else could have bought it. Arguably this would be a criminal act as well, as the goal was to artificially increase the price of a object. Because remember-the goal was not to buy it necessarily, but to inflate the price of it.

Additionally if this bid up price was used to determine the value of the donation, then its tax fraud as well.

I'm guessing this will likely kick-start the soon-to-be lucrative Trump portrait industry...MAGA!

In regards to your 2nd question...

The guy was a straw bidder; his purpose was to increase the final bid price for his own portrait. He was reimbursed because that was the plan.

BINGO.

Greywar gets it exactly right, and that is why it is a serious fraud.

bid rigging is a serious crime and that when discovered is typically prosecuted and very often the court will order the victims to be made whole....

there might be a whole bunch of folk with recourse?

Depends. If the bidder was going to buy it no matter the cost, there may be no victims on the bidding end. But then you still need to look at using a charities money to buy a painting of him, and the tax aspects. Did he write off the inflated costs? If so thats a crime.

And EXACTLY the sort of crime folks like this commit constantly. To the point where they dont even think of it as a crime. Its a crime. We need to start putting people into prison for it. And no we shouldn't start with Trump and family. There is a difference between using someone as a example for political reasons, and doing so for justice reasons. We need to start going after crimes like this far more heavily.

Even though you have YET post a single positive word about Trump.

A question for you. WHY do you think this story is true?

Because CNN said it?

Because Cohen, the CONVICTED LIAR who is going to JAIL BECAUSE of his LYING, made the claim with ZERO EVIDENCE to back it up?

Explain you rationale for believing this story.
Hey, know who’s being given a hero’s welcome at CPAC today?
None other than Oliver North.
You remember Oliver North, another guy convicted of perjury due to his dedication to a(nother) Republican President.

Funny, huh?

I believe this report because it’s exactly the sort of thing that Trump would do.
This is the guy who routinely called NYC media pretending to be someone else to either defend or promote Trump.

He’s always been a shameless huckster who believes that the rules don’t apply to him or his family, so, yeah, this is perfectly believable.
