I never liked Netanyahu but I will wait to hold on judgement. Something like this only happens because more powerful forces (over him) want it to happen. Why do they want it to happen, what's their angle?
I hardly rep on this website, I just repped you, for doing my homework for me.
That's definitely modus operandi for some people - charge and indict right before the election - either forcing the guy to step down (and not run) or he's so irrevocably damaged he won't win.
Even if you're innocent of these charges and will prove it in court, you're toast for that election.
The actual filing of charges, which include bribery, fraud, and breach of trust, will depend on the outcome of a required hearing, the Justice Ministry said in a statement.
At that hearing — which could take place after the April 9 election

In Israel people don't win elections, Party's do. As it is a coalition gov't, the Party that wins the largest of seats doesn't always mean they win. The coalition of seats won that make up the majority wins and chooses a Prime Minister from that coalition.

Except they have been reporting on this for about 5 years now, and his wife had already been charged.
The most serious allegations against Netanyahu involve his relationship with Shaul Elovitch, the controlling shareholder of Israel's telecom giant Bezeq.
Police recommended an indictment in the case based on evidence collected that confidants of Netanyahu promoted regulatory changes worth hundreds of millions of dollars to Bezeq. In exchange, they believe Netanyahu used his connections with Elovitch to receive positive press coverage on Bezeq's popular subsidiary news site, Walla. Police have said their investigation concluded that Netanyahu and Elovitch engaged in a "bribe-based relationship."
This is called "lobbying" in the US - accepting money or other favors for political campaigns. Israel, and most other civilized countries, are much more strict on this kind of stuff.
