Donald Trump, who doesn’t understand the difference between the trade deficit and the budget deficit but made reducing the trade deficit a focal point of his campaign, has instead produced the largest trade deficit this country has ever had — nearly $900 billion for the last fiscal year.
The Commerce Department said Wednesday that the United States last year posted an $891.2 billion trade deficit in merchandise, the largest in the nation’s 243-year history despite more than two years of President Trump’s “America First” policies.
The results were a sobering reminder that the laws of economics still apply to a president who had promised to supercharge economic growth while simultaneously shrinking the chronic U.S. trade deficit.
Those twin promises proved incompatible, as economists had predicted.
This has been discussed heavily already. Consumers and retailers have been stocking up in anticipation of future tariffs. Like smart consumers, they are buying while it's cheap.

Yup. I recently bought a couple laptops, knowing the prices will be going up. Also got a few expensive import tools. Didn't want to spend the money now, but I don't want to pay more later.

So?
Trade deficits are not harmful.
$1 of imports does not equal $1 of GDP.
$1 of imports generates up to $20 of GDP or more.
Imports increase your GDP, increase your Standard of Living, create jobs and free up labor to be used more efficiently.
You can produce 100% of everything, you just have to increase your population to 750 Million to 775 Million people tomorrow.
It wouldn't be difficult. You'd just have to send your military out and capture 490 Million people in other foreign States and transport them back to the US to work.
I'm absolutely certain you could find plenty of housing for those 490 Million people overnight.
