HUD requires an annual Point in Time headcount of homeless people in the US. There are degrees of homelessness ranging from couch surfing with friends and family to living on the streets.

In 2018, the count determined there were 533,000 homeless in the US. About 65% were staying in sheltered locations. The top 5 states for homelessness are:

California
NY
Florida
Texas
Washington

Half of all homeless live in one of the 50 largest cities. Makes sense given the majority of US people live in large metro areas because that’s where the majority of jobs are.

NY has the lowest number of unsheltered homeless at 5%. LA has the largest number of unsheltered homeless at 75%.

Demographics of California’s homeless:

39% black

33% Hispanic

22% white

4% other

69% male

13% physically disabled

15% substance abusers

27% serious mental illness

I have posed the question many times, what should California, specifically LA, be doing that they are not?

No one can be forced to shelter.

No one can be forced to seek treatment for mental health issues.

No one can be forced to take prescribed medications.

Being addicted to drugs is not a crime.

Reportedly, there is a backlog of 700,00 cases pending immigration court. Asylum seekers are free to disburse, throughout the US, awaiting trial. Asylum seekers have incentive to pursue asulum grants as it creates a pathway to permanent residency and benefits.

In terms of granting asylum, 30% are from south of the border. 66% are from elsewhere, mostly Asia. China makes of 33% of all asylum grants and is the single largest source country.

I do not grasp how a wall is not going to discourage asylum seekers.
They would be ICE

White minority but male sex majority is quite a contradictory combo. How is that for White male privilege! When you have diarrhea, you have to just go with the flow!

You must be incorrect.

Florida and Texas are Red states. Nothing unpleasant could possibly be happening there per the OP.

This isn't the viral infection norovirus, it's a bacteria that causes severe diarrhea for a week.

The mayor is a Republican but yet his policies on things like immigration are not aligned with President Trump at all.

Kevin Falconer is weak on containing disease and also sadly weak compared to President Trump on immigration policy. Maybe he should worry about the constant disease outbreaks in his California city as opposed to President Trump's wall.

Looks like as Typhus spreads in Los Angeles from third-world living conditions that are widespread, San Diego is dealing with a big increase of a bacteria disease that is very contagious and causes severe diarrhea for up to a week.

It's very interesting the amount of outbreaks that are coming out of nowhere and spreading rapidly due to the third-world conditions in many large cities.
Cripes we had a bacteria going around my sons' elementary school years ago that shut down the school. There were 100's.

!@#$ happens -- literally.

If and once an asylum seeker is given the opportunity for a hearing, the seeker is free to go wherever, pending a court outcome. Presumably, some have friends and family and some do not. Seems those who don't are being dumped. Local churches in some areas seem to be doing the best they can to help and are being overwhelmed.

The federal government has no obligation to feed or house those granted the opportunity for a asylum hearing.
They cannot legally work in the US. Their hearing could be years into the future, given the backlog.

Presumably most asylum seekers from Asia, especially China, arrive by plane and have pre made arrangements with family for shelter and food. That is no necessarily the case for those arriving on foot.

I do not know why the US accepts any asylum seekers from anywhere.

A few years ago, a This is America segment, focused on the camps of homeless men living in the woods in Florida. The occupants were all convicted pedophiles- the kind that went for prepubescent children. They were unable to secure housing because of their conviction and need to be registered.

One guy had a young family. He would commute by bike to the family home to take care of the kids while his wife went to work. After dinner, he would bike back to the camp. He was not allowed to live with his kids but no issue being the primary unsupervised caregiver to his own kids.

Another segment focused on the masses living in run down motels in Florida being leased as shelters for homeless families. Families with children were living in single rooms and cooking meals on hot plates. School buses made routine pick ups and drop offs at these motels. The children tended to be ostracized at schools.

Some were in Palm Beach, not too far from Mar-a-Lago.

The segment also touched on the vast number of people living in places not intended for human occupancy, throughout the state.

NY has always had a lot of transient housing that has been conscripted to house the homeless. The locals resent the heck out of these arrangements and seemed to percieve the homeless as public nuisances or in some case outright dangerous.

It suggests to me that women with children of any ethnicity are likely more receptive to and given higher priority for shelter than males of any ethnicity.

It's one thing to turn out your drug addled 28 year old son who steals anything not nailed down, that it is to turn away your sister and kids who left ^ the 28 year old.

The Schizophrenia Spectrum is broad. Those at the high end of the spectrum are often at a stage well beyond the reasonable care by family, assuming there is family and/ or those who choose not to live with family. While a potentially serious public nuisance, they are not considered a danger to themselves or others. They cannot be confined in an institution and/ or forced to take medication.
