Until some uber-fascists take over the association and change it into something worse.
Then run against them. Get your neighbors involved.
Full disclosure, we've moved into a condo with an HOA. Took some getting used to, but given that we've thrown our lot in with a lot of other people to not just preserve, but enhance property values, then it was our choice. I mean, gotta say it. Some people have some pretty horrible taste when it comes to decor. I'm glad that there's some governing board to curb the worst excesses.
I mean, the entire point of an HOA neighborhood is to essentially say, "Okay, we're banding together to ensure that our neighborhood is an attractive place to live. That means that we've agreed to some pretty specific rules in terms of exterior appearance, use of common areas, and behavior."
Public libraries are socialist. That Ben Franklin was a true subversive. He snuck that one by the Founding Fathers, when they weren't looking. So, now what, OP? Are you going to boycott public libraries?
Communism and socialism are economic systems. HOA are neither.
HOA are needed to provide city services like street lights and trash pick up and protect property values where there are no building codes or city ordinances.
At least that's what they do in my community. Don't like them? Don't buy there.
Well the first thing to know is they are voluntary. You don't HAVE to belong to an HOA. That's your choice, that you make of your own free will. Its a bit like asking if the military is communist or is it socialist. Well, does it matter if its either? Since you aren't drafted into it, who cares WHAT it is, especially people who aren't even a part of it?
But if you're asking if the members have those views, then I'd say it leans socialist since the premise of the HOA is commonly owned property that benefits all stakeholders, and which requires the financial support of all stakeholders for maintenance and improvements.
And some of the people associate with HOAs tend to have somewhat authoritarian outlooks on things OTHER than the matters with which the HOA is concerned. But whether this tendency is more pronounced in HOA members than in the general population is unknown.
All Capitalism unfortunately as you contractually agree to it, you were not forced (Communism) nor is that money being redistributed to your neighbor (Communism, Socialism).
We pay for thing that we do not individually control all the time, Insurance is the most common. Just because you pay for it does not mean they are obligated to pay for everything you want, or need honestly.
Let me guess. The OP got a letter from his HOA asking him to take down a lawn ornament of some sort.
No, they didn't like the shade of beige he painted his house.
